Local Surveying Firm Responds to MacArthur Maze Collapse

In the early Sunday morning hours of April 29, 2007, a fuel tanker overturned causing the now well-known MacArthur Maze Collapse.  The traffic accident occurred near Oakland on the southbound I-80 to I-880 connector, resulting in intense fire, heat, and the eventual collapse of the I-580 connector above.  The accident caused the closure of major highways and roadways, which resulted in traffic congestion, an impact to the local and statewide economy and public safety, and impaired movement of goods and services.

Monday, May 7, 2007, C.C. Myers, Inc. won the contract to reconstruct the damaged I-580 bridge connection at the MacArthur Maze interchange.  To add to the media attention, Caltrans offered an incentive bonus to encourage the quick reconstruction of this major arterial roadway.  Caltrans offered a bonus of $200,000 for every day the winning contractor completed the project prior to deadline.  Known for finishing emergency projects ahead of schedule, C.C. Myers, Inc. finished the project more than a month early with the new connector opened to holiday travelers just before the Memorial Day weekend.

ANDREGG GETS THE CALL

On Tuesday, May 8, 2007, ANDREGG GEOMATICS received a call from Mr. C.C. Myers to provide as-built surveys for the elevated slabs on the eastbound I-80 to the eastbound I-580 deck collapse in Oakland, California.  Within an hour of the phone call, staff was mobilized to the jobsite, which included field crewmembers from ANDREGG’s Auburn and Reno offices.

ANDREGG staff worked until the early morning hours processing field data to create Computer Aided Design (CAD) deliverables for the steel fabricators. ANDREGG GEOMATICS also used High Definition Survey (HDS) equipment, which quickly collects detailed and accurate as-built data, to take a 3D laser scan of the site.

In addition to an accelerated schedule, ANDREGG’s crews were challenged to acquire measurements with fabrication tolerance requirements within ¼-inch while overcoming a crowded, tight, and active worksite that created multiple obstructions for our survey team.

These as-built surveys were used to measure existing conditions of the ramp, concrete decks, and columns.  Using the survey measurements, fabricators were able to construct the 55-ft long ‘bent cap’ which is the concrete beam that goes across the existing columns. This beam was lifted into place on Tuesday, May 15, and weighed 243,750-pounds.  The survey measurements were also used to fabricate the sixteen girders, which hold up the concrete deck.

ANDREGG’s staff was one of many dedicated and hardworking subcontractors and suppliers who were committed to the reconstruction goals of C.C. Myers and his staff.

This project was critical to the economic and local communities’ ability to function and prosper.  Dennis Meyer, President and CEO of ANDREGG GEOMATICS, stated, “While we felt privileged to receive the call from C.C. Myers, we were fully aware of the critical nature of the task at hand.  I am very proud we have staff with the same can-do spirit that Norm Andregg started the firm with more than 60 years ago.”

ANDREGG GEOMATICS is a management-owned, certified small business with extensive experience providing land surveying and mapping services to clients for both public and private sector projects.  ANDREGG is headquartered in Auburn, California. with offices in Reno, Nevada, Truckee, California, and Vacaville, California.  Founded in Auburn in 1946, ANDREGG is proud to celebrate 61 years in Northern California and Northern Nevada.
