President’s Message: Happy 50th Anniversary to the Puget Sound Chapter CSI
 |
By Brian Keil CSI CCPR
This is it. The day is here! We’ve been talking about it since last summer. The Puget Sound Chapter Celebrates our 50th Anniversary as an official Charter of the Construction Specifications Institute.
Leading up to this day, we have had a little fun with it at our monthly meetings as we have “for perspective” talked about what was going on (back then) around the world and locally. We dug through the history books to remember what was “making the news” and what music and movies our founders might have been enjoying. We talked about the economy and the cost of living. We tried to get an idea of what it was like in 1957 and 1958 in order to immerse ourselves in the spirit of the celebration. I doubt that anyone who has read the Spectrum or attended our dinner meetings is not aware that we are celebrating our 50th Anniversary in March.
Our first newsletter, October 1961.
|
 | Be sure to join us March 13 at the Seattle Swedish Cultural Center for the festivities. For many months now, Hugh Kuyper has spearheaded an ad hoc committee to organize the celebration. We will not have an educational program this month. Instead, it will be an entirely social evening for the Puget Sound Chapter. There will be music for atmosphere and special displays to commemorate our history. Look for a mural of Seattle’s changing skyline. There will be interactive displays and decorations galore. There will be special guests and old friends. There will be a few surprises and lots of laughs. There will be many stories and many recollections. We are looking forward to seeing all of our friends, young and old, many of whom we will have the opportunity to meet for the first time.
Don’t miss this one. Register early and bring a spouse or a guest. This will be a party of memories, old and new, as we celebrate our 50 years gone and we look forward to the next. Happy 50th Anniversary to the Puget Sound Chapter CSI!

The Building Thermal Envelope: How to Be Smarter than Water and Insulate Better
March 13, 2008 Seminar: Light Construction Design
Thursday, 2:00-4:00 PM
Thermal performances of frame and panel construction types are the focus of our March Education Committee Seminar.
We will explore the rationale and practical aspects of continuous insulation over frame walls. We will also discuss the varied options and needs for vapor barriers (retarders), air barriers, weather barriers and possibly other membranes used in commercial walls.
Additionally, we will have presentations on two types of insulated panels for wall, ceiling, and roof applications, including Insulated Metal Panels and Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).
Our speakers will be:
-
Chuck Murray, Washington State University (WSU) Extension Energy Program with over 15 years experience supporting development and implementation of energy conservation strategies for buildings. Professional activities emphasize combination of original field research with implementation activities to deliver advances in building standards and codes. He has served as research lead for projects evaluating residential heating systems, ventilation systems, and currently heads a major study that will evaluate the heat & moisture transport characteristics of building envelopes. Mr. Murray is the WSU lead for energy and ventilation codes and has authored code language in Washington and through the International Code Council. Chuck will detail the findings from this study and provide a summary of high performance design options for wall systems.
-
Todd Bell, Northwest Regional Sales Manager of Premier Building Systems has been working with Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) for more than 15 years. One of the SIPs industry's most tenured experts, Todd has a thorough understanding of how to design, build and work with SIPs. In March, Todd will give our CSI group a presentation covering the entire SIPs specification and design process.
-
Bill Alma, Building Systems Northwest. The local representative for Metl-Span LLC, a major manufacturer of foam insulated metal panels, Bill has over 27 years of experience in the building trades. Fifteen of those years he spent as a general contractor, developing a broad knowledge of light construction. Bill will speak on the specification and integration of exterior foam insulated barrier systems with a variety of wall and roof assembly techniques.
New Location: Swedish Cultural Center, 1920 Dexter Avenue N, Seattle, about 1/4 mile south of the Aurora Bridge.
Register for this seminar.
