April 10 Meeting: Member’s Idea Exchange
The April program will give you an opportunity to express your opinion regarding how your chapter can be improved and what CSI should do to insure your active participation. The evening is designed to have fun and seek ideas for planning and meeting the changing needs of our members.
David Huffman, past president and active member, will preside. He has experience with this idea exchange approach in the School Facility Advisory Board, developing quality and cost effective schools.
The format for the evening will consist of posing a question (not more than three total) to each dinner table concerning the viability of CSI. Each table will have a facilitator to keep the table focused, and a recorder to list the ideas. When all the questions have been completed, lists will be hung up and duplicates crossed off. Attendees will then vote on the top four ideas for each question. A discussion of the top ideas will be done as a group, and an implementation process will be discussed.
The future of the chapter depends on you, your creativity, and your dedication. The results of our planning session will help our President-elect as he charts the course for the administration of the coming year.

The Building Thermal Envelope: How to Be Smarter than Water and Insulate Better
April 10, 2008 Seminar: Heavy Construction Design
Thursday, 2:00 – 4:00 PM
In keeping with our seminar series on the thermal choices for building enclosures, our speakers will present structurally reinforced plant precast and field cast concrete wall panels with thermal insulating cores.
This presentation will also discuss differences in plant precast, site cast tilt-up, and poured in place methods of construction. In addition to thermal insulating performance criteria available through this construction method, thermal mass, sustainability issues, LEED credits, fire codes, costs, material choices, availability, aesthetic options, and other issues pertinent to this method of construction will be discussed.
Our speakers include contractor representatives from the plant precast and field cast tilt-up industries and a materials supplier for products used in this industry. Collectively, they will present a full spectrum of information, and answer your questions, regarding this construction type.
Our speakers will be:

Mimi Gardner Gates to Speak at ProSpec
The ProSpec Committee is delighted to present Mimi Gardner Gates as this year's keynote speaker. She will share her experiences with the recent expansions of the Seattle Art Museum.
Mimi Gardner Gates joined the Seattle Art Museum as director in May 1994. A scholar of Asian Art with a strong interest in Chinese painting, ceramics and the history of ornament, she had formerly served as director of the Yale University Art Gallery.
Gates received her B.A. in Asian history from Stanford University; an Honors diploma in Chinese Language and Culture from the École Nationale des Langues Orientales Vivantes, Paris; an M.A. in Oriental and Chinese studies from the University of Iowa; and a PhD. in Art History from Yale University.
She began her tenure at Yale University Art Gallery in 1975, serving as Curator of Asian art through 1987 and as director from 1987 to 1994. Under Gates’ direction, Yale’s art gallery created a conservation studio, added a department of European and Contemporary art, expanded its collections and embarked on an ambitious program of exhibitions, many of which were organized by faculty and students. While at Yale, Gates also taught courses in Chinese art history and museum studies.
During her tenure at SAM, Gates has led the museum forward, organizing major exhibitions, publishing scholarly publications, and embarking on significant capital projects, including the establishment of a conservation studio, renovations to the Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park, creation of the Olympic Sculpture Park and an expansion of the downtown museum that will eventually triple its size.
Gates has served as president and trustee of the Association of Art Museum Directors, chaired the Federal Indemnity panel (1999–2002) at The National Endowment for the Arts, and sits on the Advisory Board of the Getty Leadership Institute and the Governing Board of the Yale University Art Gallery. In addition, she serves as a Board member for the Northwest African American Museum, the Greater Seattle YWCA, Downtown Seattle Association and Copper Canyon Press.

Out of Bounds
Sheldon Wolfe, RA, FCSI, CCS, CCCA, Institute Director, North Central Region, CSI
According to CSI's master calendar, some major activities are scheduled to occur at various intervals. Among other things, the Format series documents come up for review every seven years, the Institute long range plan is updated every five years, and, as required by Institute bylaws, "The Institute Board shall review region boundaries at intervals not to exceed five years and shall adjust the boundaries when required to maintain proper operation and administration of the regions." This is one of those years in which region boundaries are being reviewed. I don’t see much point in changing region boundaries, but subdivision of regions can, for some regions and chapters, make sense.
CSI's region boundaries have been the same for many years. We have ten regions that include the entire US, and a couple of at-large chapters in other countries. States and cities aren't the same size, and population is not evenly distributed, so it isn't surprising that there are significant differences between regions.
Download and read the entire article.
