President’s Message: Enjoy the summer but don’t forget about CSI

By Gene Fosheim CSI

Following Brian Keil as president of the Puget Sound Chapter of CSI will certainly be a tough act. I think that everyone will agree that he did a tremendous job. Even though there are many challenges facing our chapter in the coming year I am excited to start taking them on. I am honored to be the first educator to hold the position of chapter president. So Brian and all of you past presidents can expect a few calls from me from time to time soliciting your advice.

My goals for the coming year include increasing our membership, increasing attendance at our monthly meetings and making our regional conference here in Seattle one that everyone will remember for years to come. Mark your calendars now for September 25-27 at the Mayflower Hotel and set aside the second Thursday of every month starting in September for our dinner meetings and education programs.

Now get out and enjoy the inevitable upcoming sunny days. When the opportunity arises, whether at a backyard bar-b-que or at the beach, remember to promote CSI.

Awards Banquet Was Spectacular

If you missed the Annual Awards Banquet at the Sorrento Hotel, you missed a heckuva party. As expected, the hotel was quite elegant and the food was excellent. The program was also very nice. Brian Keil did a great job of presenting the awards and chevrons.

Congratulations to the following award winners.

President’s Certificate presented to Hugh Kuyper. The President’s Certificate acknowledges the outstanding work and exemplary service going above and beyond normal expectations of a member through their dedication to the chapter and its goals and activities.

“This citation is to recognize special, personal and meritorious contributions by your leadership in chairing the Relocation and the 50th Anniversary ad hoc committees for the Puget Sound Chapter.”

Chapter Technical Citation presented to Walt Suman. Awarded to an individual who has rendered distinguished service to the Chapter in the advancement of its technical research program, or has shown outstanding accomplishments in the field of technical research or education.

“As chair of the Education Committee, Walt has delivered outstanding performance for the past 2 years. He organized and ran his committee effectively. The committee produced seminar series that were well received and beneficial to the chapter.”

Donald E. Paine Award presented to Marc Chavez. Bestowed on an individual who has rendered distinguished service to the Chapter in the advancement of its objectives or its administration.

“Marc has gone way beyond the call of the Chapter in the work he has done as a 1) liaison to the Foundation, 2) Chairman, coordinator and teacher in this year's Certification Program and as 3) Chairman of the Region Conference Committee. Any one of these programs would have been enough to keep a member busy but he has managed all three with determination, focus and energy.”

David E. Thomas Award presented to Torin Mowbray. Awarded to a product representative for accessibility and reliability, honest and fair product representation; willingness to render appropriate assistance in incorporation of the product(s); currency in awareness of applicable jurisdictional requirements, environmental impacts, durability, and options; dissemination of product-related knowledge; and efforts which effectively enhance the end result.

“Torin is an exemplary product rep. He knows his product line, his recommendations are sound, he follows up on the specifications to ensure satisfactory performance. He knows his competition.”

Chapter Cooperation Award presented to Doug Brinley. Awarded to a trade association, trade union, contractor association, professional association or individual firm for exceptional liaison work with the Chapter.

“Doug Brinley has done a great job as Liaison Committee Chair and Chapter Board (Professional) Director. He always contributes with thoughtful input and solutions at Board Meetings and is actively pursuing closer ties between the Puget Sound Chapter CSI and his associates in AIA.”

The following photographs of the banquet were taken by Kirk Buhne CSI CDT. Additional photos can be viewed on the chapter website.

Thank You

By Marc Chavez CSI CCS

I was very pleased to have received the Donald E. Paine award and very sorry that I was not at the awards banquet to receive it. This award means a lot to me.

Donald Paine worked hard as one of our charter members to further not only the profession but also at the national organization. He was one of the first full time specification writers in the northwest, and during the early explosive growth of the national organization he was “The go to guy that refined the Executive Committee and Institute.” He was also our second fellow following Frank Stanton.

Hopefully the things I have done for the chapter and am continuing to do for the chapter, regional and national organization will continue to support the chapter’s recognition of me with this award.

Sometimes it’s frustrating and I ask myself “Why did I volunteer for this?”  Receiving your thanks and recognition is much appreciated!
