October 9 Meeting: How to Run a Meeting

By Dick Owen CSI

Welcome to our October meeting. Our topic "How to Run a Meeting" will be presented by Marcus Mann, Director of Employee Development for Lease Crutcher Lewis. Marcus has facilitated hundreds of high stake meetings over the past 25 years. His experience includes everything from facilitating planned meetings as a college educator, union executive board member and  town hall meeting facilitator to spontaneous meetings as a crisis negotiator - executing on-scene suicide interventions and peacefully ending armed stand-offs. Most of his meetings were successful and a few were dismal failures. He will touch on both the positive and not so positive factors during the presentation.  You will learn about pre-meeting attitudes, common barriers to effective meetings, crafting a useful agenda, and three parts of effective meetings. You will also be given the opportunity to understand leverage and how to guide the group to solutions/decisions. Marcus will share some deal-breakers, best practices and a trade secret: How to "pre-dedicate" and "re-dedicate."

So, make your dinner reservations and plan on attending this important meeting and remember to bring a fellow co-worker.  For AIA members you can obtain AIA CES credit (1 hour, non-HSW) for attending this meeting. When checking in to the meeting, mark your AIA member number on the provided sheet at the registration table. The program also offers CSI CEN learning units.

Seattle Building Enclosure Council Seminar

On Thursday, October 16, 2008, the Seattle Building Enclosure Council is presenting a program titled, “Halloween Horror Stories in the Building Enclosure World.” David Bates of Olympic Associates Company, an architect specializing in construction defects and building enclosure detailing, will be discussing good intentions gone bad.

The intent of the program is to present failures related to the building enclosure and to get a dialog going to bring to light things for designers, contractors, owners, and consultants to think about when it comes to design, construction and maintenance of buildings.

The one hour program will be presented during the October 16 meeting, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at University House, 4400 Stone Way North, in Seattle. Industry members and students are welcome, at no charge. Membership for non-students is encouraged, at $50.00 per calendar year. Please visit www.seabec.org for further details.

Mr. Wolfe Leaves Washington

By Sheldon Wolfe RA FCSI CCS CCCA, Former Institute Director, North Central Region CSI

Today was my first day in office as Institute Director for the North Central Region. Nothing went wrong today, and I am enjoying my term so far.

One congratulatory message reads, “The good news is that you won the election. The bad news is that you won the election.”

Those were the first and last words of the opening article in this series. Despite the promises of a number of people whose advice I sought before running for office, I soon learned that there is, indeed, politics in CSI, and “nothing went wrong today” was a phrase I would use only occasionally.

Download and read entire article.
