Welcome from the VT Magazine Standards Editor
Edward Au

Edward AuIt is an honor and a privilege to take on the role of Editor in Standards for the VT Magazine.  IEEE Vehicular Technology Society has been an intellectual home to me throughout my career, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity to serve in this community since 2010 as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology and a Lead Co-chair of Recent Results Track of VTC2014-Fall in Vancouver.  To me, VTS is characterized by the brilliance of its leadership and its participants, and it is a great experience to work in both the flagship VTC conference, and VT Transactions under the leadership from Prof. Weihua Zhuang, Prof. Michael Fang, and Prof. Robert Schober, respectively. I am looking forward to working closely with Prof. Klaus David, Dr. Dennis Bodson, and all related colleagues of the magazine!

Standards are crucial for the development of new technologies as they encourage innovation in the industry and shorten the time-to-market of products and technologies. In IEEE, IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) is a leading consensus building organization that nurtures, develops and advances global technologies.  IEEE standards drive the functionality, capabilities and interoperability of a wide range of products and services that transform the way people live, work and communicate.  With collaborative leaders in more than 160 countries, the IEEE-SA promotes innovation, enables the creation and expansion of international markets and help protect health and public safety. For our Society, we would develop standards under the auspices of the IEEE-SA.  This is accomplished through the VTS Standards Committee.  This committee is the Sponsor Committee, and is responsible for the development of standards within the Field of Interest of the Society.  The Committee receives guidance from the VTS Board of Governors. In addition, the VTS Standards Committee may also be requested by IEEE-SA to develop standards in the field of Vehicular technology.

In my capacity as an Editor in Standards for the Vehicular Technology Magazine, I will share with you the latest progress in different standards development organizations that are appropriate for our community.  I would like to enlist the help of the community at large.  What materials might you want to know the most from this column? How might you interest in contributing materials to this column that helps introduce to our readership interesting new areas being discussed or adopted in a standards for mutual exploration?  I have great faith in the intelligence, creativity, and ingenuity of the Society, and I do hope that you will share your thoughts and ideas with me.  I look forward to hearing from you.  Please send me your thoughts at edward.ks.au@gmail.com.
