The most frequently cited F-tag and how you can fix it
(SNF/NF)

The most frequently cited F-tag under the new survey process is F-880 – Infection Prevention & Control. Since November 2017 when the new nursing facility survey process began, more than one-third of surveys conducted nationwide have included a F-880 Infection Prevention & Control citation.

Even though nursing facilities are not required to have a designated Infection Preventionist until November 2019, here are three compelling reasons why it this training is critical now:

  • As of November 28, 2016, nursing facilities are being held accountable to more expansive infection prevention and control federal regulations.
  • Beginning November 28, 2017, the federal requirements for nursing facilities expanded further and require that every nursing facility develop and implement an antibiotic stewardship program. This is a new requirement that should be conducted with oversight from specially trained healthcare professionals.
  • Surveyors nationwide are now surveying for the expanded infection prevention and control and antibiotic stewardship requirements.

As stated in the Federal Register:

(b) Infection preventionist. The facility must designate one or more individual(s) as the infection preventionist(s) IPs) who are responsible for the facility’s IPCP. The IP must:
   (1) Have primary professional training in nursing, medical technology, microbiology, epidemiology, or other related field;
   (2) Be qualified by education, training, experience or certification;
   (3) Work at least part-time at the facility; and
   (4) Have completed specialized training in infection prevention and control.

Also see the requirement in the State Operations Manual (F-tag 868, page 671 and F-tag 882, page 707).

Here's the help your facility needs
AHCA's self-study Infection Preventionist Specialized Training (IPCO) on-line training program is a great and timely tool to help skilled nursing centers meet the CMS Requirements of Participation and avoid an F-880 citation. Individuals who complete the course will be trained to effectively implement and manage an Infection Prevention and Control Program (including antibiotic stewardship programs) at their nursing facilities.

AHCA's IPCO course includes online lectures, case studies and interactive components taught by subject matter experts who have real life experience working in long term and post-acute care. It addresses both clinical and organizational systems, processes and cultural aspects of infection prevention and control that are fundamental to effectively leading and administering successful infection prevention and control programs and antibiotic stewardship programs. Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive certificates including 23 ANCC contact hours.

The course registration fee is $450 for AHCA/NCAL members and $650 for non-members. There are no refunds and no transfers. Click here to register and pay the registration fee. Discounted group purchase rates are available for groups of 25 or more; for more information, email educate@ahca.org.

To access the IPCO course, members will need to log into ahcancalED with their AHCA/NCAL usernames and passwords. For assistance obtaining AHCA/NCAL usernames and passwords, please e-mail your name and facility contact information to update@ahca.org
