New IMA-NA Safety Products
The IMA-NA Safety Committee has produced two new safety products.

First, an IMA-NA mineral processing facility was visited by Christopher Janson, MS, CSP, CHMM, CXLT.  The purpose of the visit was to perform a facility audit to identify and discuss slip, trip and fall hazards and generate a report for the benefit of the IMA-NA membership.  The excellent report contains photographs and discussion of the representative conditions observed on the day of the audit, a discussion of relevant standards, and an analysis of MSHA injury data provided by IMA-NA.  The report is only available to IMA-NA members.  Click here to request a copy.

Second, a new health video has been produced that reviews the primary health hazards in industrial minerals operations.  Click here to watch the video.

Soda Ash Royalty Reduction Passes
Following many months of pushing for action, the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate passed legislation, H.R. 527, the Responsible Helium Administration and Stewardship Act, which included a provision that will lower the federal royalty rate U.S. soda ash producer pay from 6% to 4% for two years.  This will go into effect immediately.  This measure was important for the U.S. soda ash industry, which saw its federal royalty payments increase by 300% two years ago.  Soda ash is needed for the manufacturing of glass among other items.  The five U.S. companies supply 100% of the U.S. needs and export the remaining production (roughly 54%).  On the export market that they have been facing a steady increase in competition from their Chinese competitors who produce a synthetic form of soda ash, whereas the US production is done via natural methods which use three times less energy and emit three times less CO2 than the Chinese method.  In an effort to promote export production, the Chinese have provided their companies with a 9% VAT rebate, which amounts to about $35 million annually.  It was because of this increased competition and the very real threat of losses on the export market that the U.S. Congress saw fit to include this temporary reduction.  By lowering the federal royalty rate, U.S. companies will now be far more competitive on the foreign markets and hopefully be able to grow the industry and increase jobs domestically.

WEBINAR: Finding an Extra Hour Every Day: Time Management Strategies for Busy Managers, Leaders & Professionals
Wednesday, October 16, 2013, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EDT
In this popular program on “finding an extra hour of productivity” every day, Randy Dean, the “Totally Obsessed” Time Management/E-mail Guy" uses humor and high energy as he goes into many of the most common areas of productivity loss (and possible gain!) afflicting many busy professionals today: managing multiple projects, maintaining “traction” when dealing with tasks and interruptions, managing your e- mails more efficiently, clearing the clutter in your mind for better focus and attention, keeping staff on task, tracking “who owes you what” and getting that information on time, and better managing your calendar and contacts for better time and relationship management.  His goal is to help stressed out performers learn several new and immediately useful strategies for finding a few minutes on tasks, activities, and actions you are already doing, leading to at least an extra hour of productivity every day.

WEBINAR: Depletion Allowance: An Important Mining Benefit that is Sometimes Overlooked
Wednesday, October 30, 2013, 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EDT
One benefit available to mining operations is a federal tax deduction referred to as a “depletion allowance”.  The application of this deduction is common in the oil and gas industry but it is sometimes overlooked in mining.  That is unfortunate.  Producers of minerals are also entitled to the deduction if they meet its requirements and it may result in substantial tax savings.
