Tropical Storm Karen brewing in the Gulf

Tropical Storm Karen has formed North of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Current projections expect it to strengthen to a hurricane, weaken to a tropical storm, and make landfall somewhere near the Alabama/Florida state line. There are hurricane watches from Louisiana to Destin, FL.

List of things to do at your home:

  1. Make sure that you have fresh supplies in your emergency supply kits including water, batteries, and canned food.

  2. Top your automobiles off with gas and fill your gas cans since gas pumps will not work when the power is out.

  3. If you are near the forecast track of any storm, secure items (outside your home) that could become missiles during the storm. Click here for the complete list.

Things to consider for your credit union:

Look over your credit union's disaster plan. The League sent out an updated plan to assist credit unions in the event of a disaster earlier this year. The plan, along with other disaster recovery resources, can be viewed online here. The League can assist you before and after a disaster strikes.

One essential component of any disaster plan is the ability to provide emergency backup communications. It is important to ensure that your credit union’s backup communications plan meets its current needs in the event of a power outage.

If you have any questions regarding disaster plans, contact LSCU VP of Compliance Training and Information, Bill Berg at 866.231.0545 ext. 1028.

Florida members of Congress refuse pay

Every day that the government shut down drags on, more members of Congress are coming forward and refusing their pay or announcing they will donate it. A number of representatives from Florida have asked to have their pay suspended. They include:

    • Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R)
    • Rep. Vern Buchanan (R)
    • Rep. Ander Crenshaw (R)
    • Rep. Ron DeSantis (R)
    • Rep. Patrick Murphy (D)
    • Rep. Trey Radel (R)

"No small business would pay someone who refuses to do their job. So why should senators or House members be paid for failing to fulfill one of their most basic responsibilities? They shouldn’t,” said Buchanan, a member of the Ways and Means Committee.

Rep. Murphy says he will donate his salary to a local veterans organization. Right now 123 members of Congress are giving up their pay during the shutdown.
