D1 now a two-person race
With the first step in the race to become the new congressman from Alabama’s first district complete, Bradley Byrne and Dean Young will face each other in a run-off scheduled for Nov. 5. As a former state senator and two year college chancellor, Byrne finished first with more than 6,000 more votes than Young. However, neither received the required 50 percent of the vote to win the seat outright and will be forced to campaign for the next several weeks. In recent polling, Byrne was the favorite heading into the run-off. Most of the other candidates have endorsed Byrne and a survey of non-Byrne voters revealed that he would have been the second choice by a wide margin.
The winner of the run-off will face Burton LeFlore (D) in the general election. The district is heavily republican and the general election should not cause either republican much of a problem.
Who's next for Bachus' seat?
Last week Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-AL) announced his retirement at the end of his term. He is the longest serving member of the Alabama House delegation and is the current chairman emeritus of the House Financial Services Committee. Several names have been linked to the seat, which will open at the end of 2014. Initial favorites include State Sens. Slade Blackwell and Cam Ward, State Reps. Paul DeMarco, and Jack Williams, Jefferson County Commission President David Carrington, among others. To date, only Sen. Cam Ward and Rep. Jack Williams have announced that they will not seek the seat and will continue to seek re-election to their current positions.
Special election dates for HD 31 announced
With the recent resignation of State Rep. Barry Mask, another special election must take place in Alabama before the scheduled elections in 2014. Click here for the dates of the special election.
Quail hunt scheduled
LSCU & Affiliates will host its annual Credit Union Quail Hunt on Jan. 24 and 25 at Doublehead Resort in Town Creek, AL. The money raised from the quail hunt will benefit the LSCU FEDPAC.
