LDC opens with golf, roundtables, and exhibit hall

The LSCU & Affiliates Leadership Development Conference began early Wednesday morning with the Putt for a Purpose golf outing, ramped up in the afternoon during the director's institutes and the asset sized roundtables before ending with two hours in the sold out exhibit hall.

The asset sized roundtables were broken into three categories: under $100 million, $100 million to $500 million, and over $500 million. The conversations in each session were a little different, but each elicited excellent discussions among credit unions. One of the hot topics was NCUA examinations, as well as retaining top talent. Officials from Army Aviation Center FCU, based in Daleville, AL talked about a Leadership Council they had at the credit union that helped employees learn more about various parts of the credit union and show them a path to growth within the credit union.

The Putt for a Purpose golf outing saw more than 50 golfers hit the links to help the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation (SECUF). The proceeds will help in the professional development of credit union officials in the form of grants and scholarships. Bill Adams of Naheola Credit Union won the long drive, while Bob Roy of APCO Credit Union won the putting contest.

The night ended with the sold out exhibit hall. More than 250 attendees spent two hours browsing the hall and meeting with vendors for solutions. The quaint exhibit hall at the LDC is the perfect opportunity to spend quality time at each booth. On Thursday the exhibit hall will feature paintings from a guest outing.

Also on Thursday, LSCU & Affiliates President/CEO Patrick La Pine will speak, NCUA Region III Director Herb Yolles will talk about the state of credit unions, and Alabama Lt. Gov. Kay Ivey will speak during the Governmental Affairs Luncheon.

NCUA debuts Consumer Protection Update video Series and webpages

Credit union officials now have new resources to better understand and follow new consumer protection rules on mortgage lending and remittance transfers.

Tuesday the NCUA released a three part Consumer Protection Update video series. The first three videos were created to explain the new rules on international remittances and mortgage lending required by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

In the videos, Office of Consumer Protection Director Gail Laster outlines NCUA’s plan for implementing the new rules and explains how these new regulations will better protect consumers. Additional information like compliance resources for credit unions is also available.

The three videos are the first in a new Consumer Protection Update series. Produced by NCUA’s Office of Consumer Protection, the series is designed to inform credit unions and their members about new regulations and consumer protection rights. Future releases are planned for 2014.

The videos are available for free on NCUA’s official YouTube channel and the NCUA Consumer Protection Update page.
