CUNA Exam Survey now open

A credit union's periodic exam by federal and/or state examiners is among the most important events during any given year. A unique relationship exists between the regulator and the regulated. The exam experience can be a source of valuable learning on the one hand, but also of disagreement and conflict on the other. Improving the examination process is one of the top priorities for the League and CUNA.

To effectively represent credit unions before the NCUA and state supervisors, the League and CUNA must have a firm grasp of the current state of credit union examinations. Credit unions are asked to complete a brief survey about their most recent exam. You may receive a lot of survey requests, but this survey will contain excellent information that will help improve future examinations from federal and state examiners. The survey also has an option that allows credit unions to remain anonymous. It is vital that as many credit unions as possible offer feedback.

Follow this link to the survey. Your individual response will be completely confidential, with results reported only in aggregate form. The survey will remain open until Dec. 15. If you have any questions, contact CUNA Marketing Services or Meg Jelak at 800.356.9655 ext. 4172.

Alabama update

Four vying for open Alabama Senate seat
Two candidates join an already crowded field for the Republican Primary in Senate District 30. Former congressman and Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright is running. He served in Congress as a Democrat, but has switched parties in order to have a viable chance to win the seat. Prattville resident and Guardian Credit Union employee Jared Freeman is also running. Four total candidates have announced their intentions to run, Bright and Freeman along with Harris Garner and Suzelle Josey. With an open seat, it is too early to tell who has the advantage at this point, but this race will be one to watch.

Alabama House District 27 has two candidates
In another open seat election, HD 27 has had two candidates announce in the past several weeks. The seat, currently held by Rep. Wes Long, will be one the Democrats in Alabama hope to regain. Former Rep. Jeff McLaughlin will be looking to gain his old seat back. McLaughlin lost the race three years ago as a Democrat and will be running again as a Democrat. McLaughlin is well known and well liked in Montgomery, he spearheaded ethics reform every year until being defeated.

On the Republican side, Guntersville businessman Will Ainsworth is seeking to replace Long. He says that economic development and job creation will be his primary focus if elected. Though it appears unlikely for Democrats to retake a majority in the state house in 2014, this is a seat they expect to win.
