Tony Blair announced as CUNA GAC keynote speaker

CUNA has announced that Tony Blair, prime minister of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (1997-2007), will be the keynote speaker at the 2014 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference, Feb. 23-27 in Washington D.C.

Tony Blair is one of the most respected and admired world leaders in the last 50 years and offers an unparalleled analysis of the world's most difficult and complex issues. Mr. Blair will bring his worldly perspective to CUNA’s GAC attendees at a key time not only for the U.S. economy, but also at a time when we Unite for Good for the future of the U.S. credit union system.

LSCU hits Capitol Hill

Three members of the LSCU Governmental Affairs team spent Wednesday visiting with Alabama and Florida lawmakers. The Don't Tax My Credit Union message was front and center, along with other credit union issues. This was a planned visit to keep the dialogue open with lawmakers. All of the visits were encouraging and positive.

During the visit to Rep. Gus Bilirakis' (R-FL) office, the Don't Tax My Credit Union postcards were in his inbox. This shows that the postcards are making it to the desks of the lawmakers in both states and they are making an impact. Staffers for Rep. Bilirakis told the League that there is a difference between the credit union and banker visits. They said that credit union visits are nice because they offer insights into the issues and inform them of what credit unions do. They said bankers just stop in and complain about credit unions.

One interesting note from an Alabama visit, one office said that the only people they are hearing from on tax reform are credit unions and banks. While this cuts through some of the other clutter from tax exempt companies, it also means that credit unions need to continue the stream of calls and emails to lawmakers on this issue.

With lawmakers close to their holiday break, credit unions should consider sending a holiday card to their lawmaker reminding them to Don't Tax My Credit Union. You might also consider inviting them to visit the credit union during the holidays. If you need assistance in asking for a lawmaker visit, contact Grassroots and Political Action Coordinators Blake Westbrook (Alabama) or Andy Gonzalez (Florida).
