This holiday season, you can help the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation (SECUF) while you are doing your shopping. The AmazonSmile program is a really unique way to give back to the SECUF. We have a plan to increase financial support for the foundation in 2014 which will in turn provide more support for credit unions. This program is just one innovative way you can lend your support.

It’s really simple. The AmazonSmile program provides a unique link that shoppers can use to browse all of the millions of products offered at Many of you will do this over the next few weeks anyway. However, by utilizing the link, Amazon will route .5 percent of your purchase back to the SECUF. All you have to do is begin your purchasing by clicking on the unique link and logging in.

The money raised through the AmazonSmile program will go into the general fund for the foundation. This fund is what we use to support programs such as our educational scholarship program which offers scholarships to most of our events including the AC&E, State GACs, Hike the Hill, etc. For those of you not familiar with all that the SECUF offers, our primary purpose, in addition to providing educational scholarships, is to promote financial education, assist credit unions in raising funds for Children’s Miracle Network through CU4Kids, and deliver financial relief and assistance to credit unions and their staff in the wake of a natural disaster.

As the SECUF grows and evolves, our hope is to get more involved on the community level so we can, not only offer scholarships and disaster relief but, also fund more programs like the FiCEP financial education training for credit union staff and the Bizkids program. We also want to ramp up our fundraising for the Children’s Miracle Network and raise money to help fund innovative things for our Children’s Hospitals in Alabama and Florida.

Amazon has an average of 80 million visitors to its website every month. If all of you that normally shop on Amazon will simply click the link to enter through the AmazonSmile program, we should be able to raise significant funds. Also, be sure to share the link with friends and family shopping on Amazon this holiday season. Enjoy your shopping and know that you are making a difference for your peer credit unions in Alabama and Florida.

Where's Patrick: This is a board week at the LSCU & Affiliates. We are meeting in our Birmingham office. The League, LEVERAGE, and Southeastern Credit Union Foundation boards will meet, as well as the CUSC of Alabama board, the Credit Union House board, and the FCUSS board. I’m also hosting a retirement dinner for NCUA Region III Director Herb Yolles. To see my schedule for the next two weeks visit the LSCU Information for Credit Unions webpage.

Watt's confirmation as FHFA director expected Tuesday

The Credit Union Times reports that on Tuesday, Dec. 10, the full Senate will vote on the confirmation of Rep. Mel Watt (D-N.C.) as the Federal Housing Finance Authority (FHFA) director.

In October, Republicans successfully blocked Watt’s confirmation from advancing in the Senate.

Reacting to the vote, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Johnson (D-S.D.) said Watt was blocked simply because he is a politician.

“It is not a secret that this vote was pure obstructionist politics at play,” Johnson said then.

“The last FHFA nominee, North Carolina’s Insurance Commissioner Joe Smith, a technocrat, was also denied a vote. Now, Congressman Watt is being blocked because he is a ‘politician,’ never mind the fact that he has worked on housing policy for 21 years as a member of the House Financial Services Committee,” said the South Dakota senator.
