President sends McWatters NCUA nom to Senate

Mark McWatters' nomination to serve on the National Credit Union Administration board has been sent to the Senate by Pres. Obama.

"This is a pro forma step in the process that formally puts the nomination in the hands of the Senate. Now, the Banking Committee will begin their vetting process in advance of an eventual hearing," CUNA SVP of Legislative Affairs Ryan Donovan said.

The president announced his intent to nominate McWatters in mid-December. McWatters' nomination is subject to a nomination hearing by the U.S. Senate Banking Committee and a confirmation vote by the Senate.

If confirmed, McWatters would replace board member Michael Fryzel, whose term ended Aug. 2 this year. Fryzel is continuing to serve until another board member is confirmed.

McWatters, a Texas tax attorney, served as counsel for Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX) in 2009. He was a member of the Troubled Asset Relief Program Congressional Oversight Panel in Washington from December 2009 to April 2011 and is currently an assistant dean for graduate programs at Southern Methodist University's School of Law in Dallas.

Longtime Redstone board of directors member passes

Pamela Philyaw began serving Redstone Federal Credit Union as a volunteer in 1985 when she was recruited to the Credit Advisory Committee. She was elected to the board of directors in 1996 where she served as the secretary of the board, chair of the Asset Liability Committee, and served on various board committees.

“Ms. Philyaw was an invaluable member of the board of directors,” current Redstone Federal Credit Union chairman of the board of directors, Dr. Dorothy W. Huston, said. “Her exceptional intelligence, her genuine compassion for others, and her great energy and enthusiasm for service made her an irreplaceable asset to the credit union.”

Philyaw spent her career as a successful Aerospace engineer. During her distinguished career, she received numerous service awards and accolades, including the “Silver Snoopy,” the Astronauts’ Personal Achievement Award.

It's not too late to contribute Unite for Good stories to the 2014 GAC

This year’s CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference theme is Unite for Good. CUNA plans to highlight real stories about how credit unions Unite for Good and is looking for video, photos, and write-ups which will be used in a video montage celebrating credit unions at this year's GAC.

Credit unions do so much to be American’s best financial partners. Help the League share how Alabama and Florida credit unions are making a difference. Do you have an impactful advocacy initiative? Are you raising awareness for credit unions through your community and charitable efforts? Are you connecting with youth through education or programs? Have you implemented a new service or loan product that goes the extra mile to serve your members?

To share your stories, photos and video links, post them at Uniteforgood.org. It is as easy as doing a Facebook post.

CUNA has extended the deadline to Monday, Jan. 13. Contact Amy Nigrelli, Angela Barnett or uniteforgood@cuna.coop with questions.
