Jolly wins Florida primary for Congressional District 13

In a somewhat expected result, David Jolly won the Republican nomination for Congressional District 13 in Florida. Jolly garnered 45 percent of the vote and easily beat challengers state Rep. Kathleen Peters and retired Marine Brig. Gen. Mark Bircher.

With the primary win, Jolly moves on to the special election in March. He will face Democrat Alex Sink for the right to fill the seat formerly held by Rep. Bill Young (R) who passed away in October. Sink was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Congressional District 13 encompasses Pinellas county in Tampa.

Atwater misses cut at FAU
According to The Associated Press, Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater is not a finalist for the Florida Atlantic University presidency. Atwater was one of 10 semifinalists for the position, but was left out when the search committee picked three finalists on Jan. 10. The finalists are former U.S. Sen. George LeMieux, Purdue University Management School Dean, Christopher Early, and the Clemson University Vice President for Economic Development, John Kelly. After missing the cut, Atwater said via Facebook that he plans to serve as Florida CFO for years to come.

Special election set to replace Steve Precourt in Florida House
A special election has been scheduled to choose a new representative for state House District 44, the secretary of state announced Friday. The district, which includes west Orange County, had been represented by Steve Precourt, a Republican who was also majority leader. Precourt resigned Thursday after being chosen to head the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority. A primary — if necessary — is set for March 11, with the special election to follow April 8. Precourt, 53, had been in the Legislature since 2006. He would have been termed out in November had he stayed in office.

CDFI programs, WOCCU funded in congressional budget deal

CUNA reported Tuesday the $1.1 trillion negotiated budget deal worked out by lawmakers in the House and Senate includes money for two programs credit unions use. The U.S. Treasury's Community Development Financial Institutions Fund reportedly was scheduled to receive $226 million for the Community Development Financial Institutions Fund and $1.2 million for the Community Development Revolving Loan Fund.

CUNA and World Council of Credit Unions also requested $10 million for the cooperative development programs of the United States Agency for International Development, as well as $265 million for microenterprise and microfinance. Both of these requested amounts were included in the omnibus agreement, the association reported.
