Data security bill filed in FL

This week, a bill was filed in the Florida House of Representatives by the House Civil Justice Subcommittee that addresses some of the issues with data security. The bill, CJS4-14, a committee bill, would require corporations, and governmental entities, that do business in Florida and collect personal information, to provide notice to the Attorney General's office and any persons affected that a breach had occurred. The notification would have to be made within 30 days of discovering the breach unless a delay is ordered by a state or federal law enforcement agency investigating the breach.

The League's GA team will be meeting with committee members to discuss this bill, which is a good step in the right direction on protecting personal information. While the bill does not go far enough, not requiring merchants to cover costs of a loss in breaches where they did not appropriately protect the information, the Florida Credit Union Association will be working to support this legislation.

Fraud alert from JW Marriott

The LSCU & Affiliates has recently learned that customers of the JW Marriott in Orlando may have been targets for fraud. Since this is the hotel for the LSCU & Affiliates Annual Convention and Exposition (AC&E) every June, the League wanted to make you aware.

If you or any of your staff or board members receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from the JW Marriott asking to make your reservations, do not provide them with any information. The point of the fraud is to acquire your credit card information. They do this by requesting your email address in order to provide a link for you to fill out information to book your room. This is a fraudulent call and you should not provide them with any information.

Remember, the JW Marriott does not contact guests in this manner. All reservations for the AC&E should be made through the League's Hotel Information webpage, which is secure. If you have any questions on this fraud alert, contact LSCU & Affiliates Director of Events Julianne Talley at 866.231.0545 ext. 1148.

CUNA to select 12 students for Googolplex youth editorial board

Requests for applications are being accepted through March 7 for all 12 youth editorial board positions. The new student board members’ terms will begin on June 1. Googolplex is the youth-focused element of CUNA’s suite of microsites, which guide credit union members through financial decisions at every stage of life. Googolplex features interactive games, videos, blogs, and other content dealing with money matters and real life issues to promote financial literacy for youth in grades three through 12.

Youth editorial board members complete two brief, online critiques each month of stories and games in age-specific sections of Googolplex’s award-winning three-in-one website. At the end of their terms, each of the middle- and high-school board members writes an original story for Googolplex.

Applications are available by request from Laurel Purves, Googolplex youth editorial board liaison, (608) 231-4088. Please state the child’s grade level or age equivalent if home-schooled. Requests are due by March 7, 2014.

More than 150 credit unions across the country participating in CO-OP Miracle Match raised $3 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals in 2013, $1 million of which was matching funds provided under the CO-OP Financial Services program.

“CO-OP Financial Services established CO-OP Miracle Match on behalf of our member credit unions in 2008 as a way to encourage Credit Unions for Kids fundraisers,” said Stan Hollen, president/CEO of CO-OP financial services. “This marks the third year in a row that the combined totals of CO-OP and participating credit unions surpassed the $3 million mark in donations.”

Credit unions interested in applying for match grants in 2014 under the CO-OP Miracle Match program may do so by clicking here.

The credit union fundraisers benefited 98 different children’s hospitals in 34 states in 2013. More than 100 fundraisers were first-time events by the sponsoring credit union and nearly half of the participating credit unions – about 70 – were new to the CO-OP Miracle Match program.
