Alabama Credit Union Act Update moves through committee

On Wednesday the House Financial Services Committee unanimously voted to give HB 165 by Rep. Greg Wren (R-Montgomery), the State Credit Union Act Update, a favorable report. The bill, which updates numerous sections of the Alabama Credit Union Act, allows credit unions in the state to operate more effectively in the ever-changing world of financial services. HB 165 is now in position to be taken up by the entire Alabama House of Representatives.

Earlier this session the companion to HB 165, SB 212 by Senator Slade Blackwell (R-Mountain Brook) was passed out of the Senate Banking & Insurance Committee. The LSCU Government Affairs team is working to have both bills voted on and passed by their respective chambers.

Register today for the FCUA State GAC

The newly renamed FCUA State GAC, is just around the corner, March 25-26 in Tallahassee. The FCUA State GAC is packed full of valuable advocacy and regulatory information with opportunities for everyone (not just for CEOs) to learn more about advocacy and build relationships with lawmakers.

At this year's event Bob McKnight will share his perspective on the Florida legislature based upon his experience as a former lawmaker. He will explain why having grassroots advocates, such as credit union members, reach out to their lawmakers both at home in the district and in Tallahassee is so important.

Additionally, attendees will meet with lawmakers at the Capitol to discuss credit union issues during the Hill visits. Following the Hill visits, the League will host its Lawmaker Reception at the Governor’s Club for attendees and lawmakers to mingle in a more relaxed atmosphere.

LSCU & Affiliates delivers in 2013

Each year the LSCU & Affiliates puts together a document highlighting many of the League's accomplishments on behalf of affiliated credit unions and oftentimes with credit unions. The document looks at governmental affairs, education, cooperative initiatives, LEVERAGE, and the League as a whole.

Some of the accomplishments include state-specific advocacy brands, the Alabama Credit Union Association and the Florida Credit Union Association, to raise the profile of credit unions in Montgomery, Tallahassee, and Washington, D.C. Credit unions can now earn Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits at many of the League's events. Cooperative Initiatives has raised the League's affiliation rate to 84 percent. Communications puts credit unions in front of an average of 5.4 million people every year through proactive media relations. LEVERAGE expanded its audit and compliance offerings by working with Corporate America CU to purchase its CU Audit and Compliance Group and purchasing a book of business from Hiram Hollifield, LLC.

The document also looks ahead to 2014. It is an excellent resource for credit unions to see what the League is accomplishing. Credit unions are encouraged to share this with senior staff and their boards. Click "How We Delivered" to download the document. If you have any trouble downloading, contact LSCU VP, Communications Mike Bridges at 866.231.0545 ext. 1022.

Know someone worthy of recognition? Nominate them for an LSCU Award

The LSCU is looking for good men and women that have really made a difference at a credit union, within the community, and the credit union industry as a whole, as well as credit unions that are good proponents of the credit union philosophy of “people helping people” whether it’s for its members or community.

Did your credit union have a good year last year? Did it do something outstanding in the way of community involvement? Has your CEO or a member of the management team gone above and beyond in efforts to advance the credit union movement whether it is in your community, your state, or the nation? Is there a young professional that has shown proven dedication and enthusiasm for credit unions? Do you know a credit union director that has served as a lifelong proponent of credit unions and has gone above and beyond the call of duty?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, submit an entry today.  The LSCU award categories include Distinguished Service Award, Professional of the Year, Young Professional of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Credit Union of the Year (by asset size), and the Brother’s Keeper Award.
