Today is "Thank You Thursday"

The dust has not even settled on Chairman Dave Camp’s tax reform proposal, which left credit unions’ tax status untouched, but the bank trades are wasting no time in attacking the plan for not including taxation of credit unions. This week the American Bankers Association (ABA) and the Independent Community Bankers of America (ICBA) issued a joint letter to Chairman Camp, copied to all House Ways and Means Committee members, urging him to reconsider taxing credit unions.

These tired attacks deserve a response, therefore CUNA is launching “Thank You Thursday” today, March 13. Similar to the successful “Don’t Tax Tuesday” campaigns, this effort will make use of social media to mobilize grassroots, this time to thank members of the House Ways & Means Committee for their exclusion of credit unions from new taxes.

Starting today, the Tweet Congress link on the Don't Tax website will populate pre-drafted tweets including the handles of Chairman Camp, Ranking Member Sandy Levin, and a third handle that will rotate through the names of the other members of the House Ways & Means Committee.

Credit unions exclusion from Chairman Camp’s plan is a significant victory in a key battle, but the war wages on. It is important at this juncture to not let the Ways & Means Committees’ commitment to protecting the credit union tax status go unrecognized and unheralded, particularly as they hear complaints from bank lobbyists.

Bill Cheney to leave CUNA in mid-June

CUNA CEO Bill Cheney announced today that will be leaving his president/CEO position in mid-June to join SchoolsFirst Federal Credit Union in Santa Ana, CA. Cheney says that his return to California to lead a credit union is born out of his desire to serve the credit union movement by taking a hands-on role.

Cheney informed state leagues today that the opportunity to return to California was just too great. As many of you know, he worked in California before taking the CUNA position. Chairman Dennis Pierce will be putting together a search committee and focusing on leadership that will enhance the current team at CUNA, as well as leverage the strengths of the three-tiered system of CUNA, Leagues, and credit unions.

The credit union movement has seen victories under Cheney. Last month credit unions were not named in the tax discussion draft released by the Way and Means Committee. A major victory. Also, in 2012 credit unions were able to keep key bank legislation from passing late in the session. Another good victory. Plus, he oversaw the process to bring a shared strategic vision to credit unions, "Americans choose credit unions as their best financial partners." Something that had never been done before for credit unions.
