Alabama Credit Union Association legislative update

This past week the Alabama Senate Banking & Insurance Committee gave final approval to HB 165, the Alabama State Credit Union Act Update. HB 165, sponsored by Rep. Greg Wren (R-Montgomery), can now be considered by the full Senate and, if passed, will head to the governor for his signature. The League thanks Rep. Wren and the entire Senate Banking & Insurance Committee for their support of this important legislation.

In the Alabama House, SB 121 by Sen. Arthur Orr (R-Decatur) was passed unanimously and now goes to Governor Bentley for his signature. SB 121 is the patent troll legislation that garnered a lot of attention this session once so many businesses and trade groups in Alabama began showing their support for this much needed legislation. During the State GAC in Montgomery several credit unions met with lawmakers on this bill and voiced the support of credit unions and the LSCU. You can read a more in-depth story on patent trolling later this month when Signal Magazine is mailed to credit unions.

This week the Alabama House will address the Education Trust Fund Budget.

Florida Credit Union Association legislative update

A bill sponsored by Sen. Nancy Detert (R-Venice), SB 242, will be heard on the Senate floor Thursday. Titled the Keeping I.D. Safe (K.I.D.S.) Act, this bill would allow parents and guardians to set up a credit record for their child and freeze it, protecting that child's Social Security number and other personal information until the child is ready to use credit. The law would also apply to vulnerable adults who have a legal guardian.

The House companion to this legislation, HB 151, by Rep. Heather Fitzenhagen (R-Ft. Myers), has passed favorably from each of its committees of reference and is waiting to be heard on the House floor. With data security a high priority for credit unions, this good piece of legislation remains one that the League will continue to advocate for.

CUNA Mutual Group is supporting women in global credit union leadership roles by sponsoring a scholarship being offered through the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU). The WOCCU Global Women’s Leadership Network Scholarship, supported by a $20,000 CUNA Mutual Group grant, aims to further the careers of emerging credit union leaders by supporting projects that solve a problem or meet a credit union and/or a community need.

“Our expanded support to a long-time partner like WOCCU is a natural extension of CUNA Mutual Group’s commitment to credit unions worldwide,” said Faye Patzner, executive vice president and chief administrative officer, CUNA Mutual Group. “We are pleased and proud to sponsor the Global Women’s Leadership Network scholarship and become the only Diamond-Level sponsor of WOCCU.”

Scholarship candidates will be selected to attend the 2014 Global Women’s Leadership Forum and World Credit Union Conference, in Australia, July 25-30.
