League warns members: Beware of hotel "room block pirates"

The League wants to make sure that attendees registering for the 2014 Southeast Credit Union Conference (SCUCE)--as well as any other league events--are aware of "room block pirates." These pirates are unofficial housing companies that use various tactics to woo meeting attendees to book outside the official room block. The JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes Resort & Spa, which is where the official room block is for the SCUCE, does not contact guests in this manner.

Be sure to make your hotel reservations through the customized reservation link for the SCUCE created by the JW Marriott or by calling them directly. Unfortunately, it is extremely difficult for the League to help an attendee if his or her reservation is lost or if the hotel oversells. If you have any questions, contact LSCU Director of Conferences Julianne Talley at 866.231.0454, ext. 1148.

With the NCUA comment period on risk-based capital approaching on May 28, the League is holding a series of risk-based capital meetings across Alabama and Florida. The meetings will educate credit unions on the NCUA's proposal and provide resources for their comment letter.

The first two meetings were held in Jacksonville this past Tuesday and Birmingham this past Thursday. LSCU & Affiliates VP of Compliance Training and Information Bill Berg and Director of Regulatory Advocacy Scott Morris are leading the sessions. This is a great time for credit unions to ask questions and gain more knowledge on this issue. The next sessions, and their location, will be:

  • April 21 - Gainesville - Florida CU
  • April 22 - Tampa - Suncoast CU
  • April 23 - Orlando - Fairwinds CU
  • April 24 - Huntsville - Redstone FCU
  • April 24 - West Palm Beach - Goldcoast FCU
  • April 25 - Tallahassee - Credit Union Center

Check out the LSCU Risk-Based Capital Resources webpage for the times. Email Bill (Florida) or Scott (Alabama) if you would like to attend. Also look for the resources on the page including the NCUA's and CUNA's calculators, the proposed rule, and a comment letter draft from Florida Credit Union.
