Weather causing closures and delays along Gulf Coast

Severe weather continues to plague Alabama and the Florida panhandle. Heavy rains along the Gulf Coast overnight have caused flooding from Mobile to Pensacola. Many credit unions along the coast are either closed today or opening midday. It does not appear that any credit union structure has incurred significant damage.

Here's a list of closures and delays:

  • Alabama CU - Gulf Coast offices tentatively opening at noon
  • Florida State Employees - opening at noon at three locations in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties
  • Members First CU of Florida - all offices closed, possibly open at 1p.m.
  • Pen Air FCU - all offices closed until further notice

If your credit union is closed or on a delay, let the League know by dropping an email or posting on the Facebook page.

McWatters NCUA nomination approved by Senate Banking Committee

The nomination of J. Mark McWatters to become a member of the National Credit Union Administration board was cleared Tuesday and will go to the full U.S. Senate for final confirmation.

McWatters was nominated in December to fill Republican Michael Fryzel's spot on the NCUA board. Fryzel has been serving since July 2008 and his term has expired.

During his March nomination hearing before the Senate Banking Committee--the panel that just voted to clear his name for Senate floor action--McWatters said he intends to work with NCUA board members, agency staff, and external stakeholders "in an open and respectful manner, with the goal of finding a common ground and working cooperatively through any differences."

If fully confirmed by the Senate, as expected, McWatters will join NCUA Chair Debbie Matz and board member Rick Metsger to fill out the three-member board.

Florida Credit Union Association legislative update

With the final week of the 2014 legislative session upon us, lawmakers are in the final stages of passing the 75 billion dollar budget and are expected to adjourn Friday.

The governmental affairs team is closely monitoring several bills of importance to credit unions. Expected to pass is SB 1012/HB 673 relating to financial institutions and SB 1524/HB 7085 relating to data breach.

Unfortunately, SB 212/HB 367 relating to financial literacy will not be passed this year. The FCUA will continue to work with the bill sponsors in the off-season to make this a priority for the 2015 legislative session. Click the video on the right to hear from the bill sponsors on why financial literacy needs to be a priority and how credit unions can help.

A comprehensive post session update will be made available next week.
