Credit unions celebrate Florida resort opening

Just in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, the Holiday Inn Resort in Fort Walton Beach, FL, opened to the public on May 22. The resort is operated by Innisfree Hotels Inc., which owns or manages 2,400 hotel rooms and has more than 1,000 employees nationwide. The $56 billion Navy Federal and the $1.2 billion Pen Air worked together to lend $18.9 million toward the project, the credit unions stated in a news release.

Located on U.S. Air Force property, the beachfront resort was also made possible by the Air Force’s Enhanced Use Lease program. To show its gratitude, Innisfree Hotels will offer discounted rooms for military families, according to both credit unions.

The Holiday Inn Resort marks the credit unions’ second exclusive joint venture with Innisfree Hotels, having previously financed the Hyatt Place at the Pensacola Airport in 2012.

Cooperative Image Campaign kicks off today

Consumers across Alabama and Florida will see the "Credit Unions: we're giving banking a better name" message beginning today and running through July. The campaign kicks off with the online portion coming into full swing. That means that consumers using smart phones and tablets will see the message through YouTube, Pandora, video pre-rolls, Twitter, Facebook, email marketing through Yahoo and mobile searches.

The online media buy for the campaign is very robust. More than half of the $1 million media buy is geared toward online where more consumers are spending their time. Beginning next week, TV ads will play in many markets, along with radio weather tags. The overall media buy for the campaign is much more diverse than the previous two campaigns.

To see more about the campaigns and to look at the media buy in your area, visit the LSCU Cooperative Image Campaign webpage. Credit unions are also encouraged to make sure their information is updated on A Smarter Choice website. The search engine is the same one used for the betternameforbanking website. If you have any problems or would like to know more about the campaign, contact LSCU & Affiliates VP of Communications Mike Bridges at 866.231.0545 or Director of Communications Amy Jowers at ext. 1020.

Grow Financial named top CU for consumer-friendly banking

Grow Financial FCU of Tampa Bay has been recognized by personal finance website NerdWallet for its consumer-friendly products and services. Grow Financial was named a top credit union in the Southeast region in NerdWallet’s Consumer Banking Index.

“Grow Financial delivers on everything that NerdWallet looks for in a consumer-friendly financial institution. Low-fee products and simple, free access options help make Grow Financial an excellent option for Florida consumers,” said NerdWallet analyst John Gower.

NerdWallet’s Consumer Banking Index assesses banks and credit unions based on seven criteria: free checking, high-yield savings, free online bill pay, ATM access, branch access, mobile access, and customer service. These criteria were selected by a survey of 1,000 U.S. adults as key considerations when choosing a financial institution.

Spring 2014 marks second semi-annual release of this index and includes 150 of the nation’s largest banks and credit unions. Receiving high marks for each category indicates Grow Financial’s superior value to consumers.

Free webinar June 3 - Changing Lanes: The New Paths to Car Buying

Changing Lanes: The New Paths to Car Buying” will be held at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., on Tuesday, June 3. The webinar is open to all credit unions at no cost.

Three years ago, families were exposed to an average of 329 different digital ads on a typical 90-day car-shopping excursion, according to Cobalt’s June 2011 study, “A Guide to the Modern Car-Shopper Journey.” Since then, with smartphones seeing a rapid increase in popularity, that number only continues to rise.

What does that mean for credit unions? The hour-long webinar will take a generational view of car buyers, what influences them, and explore then-and-now journeys of three personas, including the first-car buyer, the family vehicle buyer, and the luxury/fun vehicle buyer. The webinar will also cover technology and the empowerment it provides in the buying process, triggers for different decision points and the importance of leveraging convenience.
