Patent troll bill dies in senate

Over the past year, intellectual property reform advocates in Congress tried to advance legislation to crack down on patent trolls. But, that process may have ground to a halt, after Sen. Pat Leahy (D-Vt.), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, abruptly pulled the “Patent Transparency and Improvements Act” from the Senate agenda.

The Senate Judiciary Committee had been working long and hard to reach an agreement on changes to the bill aimed at reducing patent litigation caused by patent trolls, but Leahy said he is shelving the bill because the two sides could not compromise to prevent patent litigation abuse without punishing innovators.

"Because there is not sufficient support behind any comprehensive deal, I am taking the patent bill off the Senate Judiciary Committee agenda," Leahy said in a statement. "If the stakeholders are able to reach a more targeted agreement that focuses on the problem of patent trolls, there will be a path for passage this year and I will bring it immediately to the committee.”

SCUCE attendees mingle in a full exhibit hall

The Southeast Credit Union Conference and Expo began bright and early Wednesday morning with 110 golfers playing in the Southeastern Credit Union Foundation golf outing. The weather held off and everyone got to play a round of golf for charity. The golf awards will be handed out Friday night. Three individual golfers won awards including The Infirmary CEO Keith McKinley winning the putting contest.

The day ended in the exhibit hall. CEOs were given an hour preview. This gave the more than 135 vendors a chance to speak with CEOs in a relaxed setting. The exhibit hall opened to all attendees for the next 90 minutes. Everyone had a great time mingling and learning more about products and services. This gave credit unions a literal one-stop-shop to help streamline their operations.

Also on Wednesday, the director's institute sessions and the Young Professionals Group (YPG) sessions were held. The YPGs learned more about Biz Kid$ financial education and the seven cooperative principles. This gave the group a great time to meet, get to know each other, and learn more about the cooperative principles.
