CULAC raises $3.25M for '13-14 election cycle

The Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) has raised more $3.25 million for the 2013-14 election cycle as of June 30 according to its Federal Election Commission filing to come later this month.

CULAC is the federal political action committee for the Credit Union National Association, with a mission to support credit union-friendly candidates running for federal office.

So far almost $2.5 million has gone directly to candidates, split almost evenly between parties, with 50.01 percent of contributions going to Democratic candidates, 49.85 percent to Republican candidates, and 0.14 percent to independent candidates.

"If current trends continue, CULAC will again set another fundraising record this year," said Trey Hawkins, CUNA vice president of political affairs.

CULAC was listed by Politico as one of the top giving PACs this election cycle ( News Now June 25).

According to its Articles of Association, CULAC's purpose is to "provide the opportunity for individuals interested in the future of the credit union movement to contribute to the support of worthy candidates for federal office who believe, and have demonstrated their belief, in the principles to which the industry is dedicated."

Florida first to adopt national financial education standards

Last month, June 2014, the State Board of Education adopted a "financial literacy strand" into its social studies standards. Florida was the first in the nation to put in place the national Council for Economic Education's Standards for Financial Literacy, which includes lessons on such subjects as saving and investment.

This sets the stage for a full course on the subject sometime in the future to go along with the growing list of other state mandated topics that students face. Legislation by Sen. Dorothy Hukill (R-Port Orange) and Rep. Heather Dawes Fitzenhagen (R-Fort Myers) would have required students to complete a one-semester financial literacy course but SB 212 and HB 367 did not leave the committee process in the 2014 session.

LSCU is fully committed to continue working with the sponsors on this legislation next session.
