Anthem of Maine Health Plans, Inc. Fined $225,000 by Maine Bureau of Insurance
The Maine Bureau of Insurance has fined Anthem Health Plans of Maine, Inc. $225,000 for its failure to adequately track and respond to customer complaints. Last Monday, Jan. 9, Insurance Superintendent Eric Cioppa announced the fine in a press release stating that the health plan repeatedly failed to follow-up on complaints filed by its customers with the Bureau. Maine law requires that such complaints be responded to within 14 days, but in two-thirds of the cases, Anthem failed to do so.
Anthem has agreed to pay the civil penalty as part of a consent agreement. In addition to the fine, the company must file a corrective action plan with the bureau within 30 days of signing the agreement.
