The Virtual Group Election Period is Now Open for MIPS in 2018
As advocated by the AMA, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced in the 2018 Quality Payment Program (QPP) proposed rule that solo practitioners and groups can choose to participate in the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) as a virtual group for the 2018 performance period. The intent of virtual groups is to allow small groups to come together and pool their resources for greater success under MIPS. To form a virtual group, solo practitioners and groups would need to engage in an election process. For the 2018 performance year, the election period runs to Dec. 1, 2017. Read More
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working with federal, state, territorial, and local agencies and global health partners in response to recent hurricanes. CDC is aware of media reports and anecdotal accounts of various infectious diseases in hurricane-affected areas, including Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands (USVI). Because of compromised drinking water and decreased access to safe water, food, and shelter, the conditions for outbreaks of infectious diseases exist. Read More

The Maine Legislature is in recess at present. Should they return for a special session in the fall of 2017 (which the Governor has said will happen), the Weekly Update will feature articles concerning aspects of that work of interest to medicine. Otherwise, legislative report articles will resume, and Legislative Committee calls will begin, when the Legislature returns to Augusta in January 2018. Read More

MMA Hopes to Open Office Tomorrow
Like many Mainers today, the MMA office in the Frank O. Stred Building in Manchester was without power and most of the MMA staff was without power in their homes. The power outage affected the entire MMA campus including the Hanley Building and Maine Quality Counts, the Maine Dental Association, and the MPHP in the Dalco House.
