Happy New Year and Predictions
The Maine Medical Association wishes all its members and their families all the best for 2018. We appreciate your membership and the dedicated medical care you provide to your patients. Below are some predictions MMA staff are offering for the coming year.
The Maine Legislature returns to Augusta on January 3rd. The MMA and the MOA work together to provide a physician to serve as Doctor of the Day for every day the Legislature is actually in session. It's a great opportunity...and not just for you!
More than 8.7 million people signed up for coverage in 2018 under the provisions of the Affordable Care Act, about 80,000 fewer sign-ups than an initial count provided by the government one week ago. The small decrease was due to late cancellations, according to a spokesperson for Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
Dr. Russell V. Radcliffe, MD, who served as president of the Maine Medical Association in 1996-97, died peacefully at his home in Florida on December 15th.
The MMA's MICIS (Maine Independent Clinical Information Service) program will continue to offer CME on opioid prescribing and Maine's opioid laws to help prescribers meet their 3 hour opioid CME requirements.
A new rule from the Maine CDC requires vaccination of children in 7th grade, with a booster in 12th grade, against meningococcal meningitis. See below for an article from the CDC's Immunization Program about this important vaccine.
See information about a naloxone study published in the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
An important press release from the Office of MaineCare Services about changes that became effective January 1, 2018.
Legislative Calls to Resume January 9th
The Maine Legislature is in recess at present. The Weekly Update will feature articles concerning aspects of that work of interest to medicine. Legislative report articles will resume, and Legislative Committee calls will begin, when the Legislature returns to Augusta in January 2018. The first call will be Tuesday, January 9th, at 8 p.m., so mark your calendars now.
The general effective date for legislation enacted during the First Regular Session (2017) of the 128th Maine Legislature was earlier this month on November 2, 2017. This month we will highlight the two new laws relating to the prescription and use of naloxone (Trade name: Narcan) for opioid overdose treatment. We hope this helps your organization's compliance efforts and please call the MMA legal staff with any questions you may have.
