MPHA Annual Conference October 16th: Addiction and the State of Public Health in Maine

The Maine Medical Association is one of the primary sponsors of the Maine Public Health Association annual conference on October 16, 2018, focusing on Addiction and the State of Public Health in Maine.

The keynote address on “Narrowing Health Disparities and Advancing Health Equity” will be presented by Nicole Alexander Scott of the Rhode Island Department of Health.

The afternoon plenary session will feature an in-depth look at rebuilding Maine’s public health system, “Public Health Reimagined: A Blueprint for Building a Modern, Responsive, and Relevant Public Health System in Maine” by Lisa Miller of the Bingham Program. Last year, The Bingham Program asked a small group of advisors - all with deep interest, experience, and passion for public health - to think about the future of public health in Maine. What’s been working well? What’s in decline or was never in place to begin with? What might we have built 20 years ago when we first started receiving funds from the tobacco settlement, knowing what we know today? And most importantly, what is the blueprint for a modern, responsive, and relevant public health system in Maine? This session will provide participants with an immersion into the process, goals, recommendations, and payment models from Bingham’s Public Health Reimagined blueprint.

A wide assortment of breakout sessions will look at various aspects of the opioid problem in Maine and what is being done to address it. The agenda may be found at https://mpha23.wildapricot.org/resources/Documents/2018%20Conference%20Program.pdf.
