Expectations High for Mills Administration on Health Care Issues
Expectations are running high in the health care community as the Governor-elect, the first female Governor of the State, has a substantial interest in and much background on issues impacting physicians, hospitals and other health care practitioners and organizations. She was one of the three founders of the Maine Opiate Collaborative, organized in September, 2015 and also was a member of the Task Force to Address the Opioid Crisis in the State which presented its report in December, 2017 to the Second Session of the 128th Legislature. During the campaign she issued a detailed 10 point plan to address the opioid/heroin/fentanyl issue in the state. Among those recommendations are removing the two year limit for medication assisted therapy (MAT) in MaineCare and increasing reimbursement to providers of MAT.
During the 128th Legislature, Governor-elect Mills presented legislation to increase the transparency of steep increases in drug costs and more recently has advocated for lowering the costs of health insurance premiums. She has named MidCoast Hospital CEO Lois N. Skillings to her transition team which is charged with making recommendations for the major cabinet positions, including Commissioner of Health and Human Services.
MMA looks forward to working with the Mills administration as positions are filled and the Governor-elect takes office.
