On Friday (Dec. 16) Governor-Elect Janet Mills named Washington insider Jeanne Lambrew, PhD to serve as Commissioner of the Department of Health and Human Services. Once confirmed by the Legislature, Lambrew will take over the largest Department in state government with a budget of over $3.4 billion and 3,400 employees.

A federal judge in Texas has ruled that the Affordable Care Act (ACA) is unconstitutional in a case brought by 20 Attorneys General from conservative states, a case joined by Maine Governor Paul LePage. An appeal to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals is expected and in the meantime, the ACA is still the law of the land.
