The Maine State Government will be wasting no time getting started on the year 2019. On January 2nd the Legislature convenes at 2:00 p.m., after which it will adjourn to the Augusta Civic Center for the inauguration of Maine's first woman Governor, Janet T. Mills.
This past Friday,Governor-elect Janet Mills nominated former Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck to the position of Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. Sauschuck currently is serving as an assistant city manager for the City of Portland. She also nominated the current warden at the Maine State Prison, Randall Liberty, to serve as Commissioner of the Department of Corrections.
The Portland Press Herald reports that the Maine CDC figures indicate a significant decrease in the incidence of Lyme disease in Maine in 2018.

MMA Legislative Committee Calls to Resume on January 8th
The Maine Medical Association's weekly Legislative Committee calls will resume on January 8, 2019 and will continue until the end of the legislative session.
Committee assignments for the 129th Legislature were announced this past week. This may be the first time in Maine's history that the Health and Human Services Committee is chaired by two physicians. Geoffrey Gratwick, M.D. is the Senate Chair, and Patricia Hymanson, M.D. is the House Chair. In addition, first time Senator Ned Claxton, M.D. will also serve on the Committee.
