MMA's Gordon Smith Named Maine's Director of Opioid Response
Last Thursday, Governor Janet Mills announced the appointment of Gordon Smith, the Maine Medical Association's Executive Vice President, to serve as Maine's Director of Opioid Response. He will begin in that new role on February 1st. The MMA's loss is the State's gain.
In an ongoing effort to increase drug price transparency and address
the rising cost of prescription drugs, the AMA has released a two-page
advocacy document "Improving Prescription Drug Price and Cost Transparency"
which outlines specific policy proposals aimed at each of the key
players involved in drug pricing: pharmaceutical companies, pharmacy
benefit managers (PBMs) and health insurers. Read More
Research is showing a concerning increase in the prescription of benzodiazepine medication, with about half of all such prescriptions coming from primary care physicians. This is particularly concerning because benzodiazepines are implicated in a growing number of overdose-related deaths. Addressing prescribing patterns may help curb this growing use.
