MMA Pursues Prior Authorization Reform in 129th Maine Legislature In response to substantial complaints from the front lines of medicine in Maine about the burden of health insurance carrier prior authorization processes, the MMA is working with Senator Geoffrey Gratwick, M.D. as the prime sponsor of L.D. 705, An Act Regarding the Process for Obtaining Prior Authorization for Health Insurance Purposes in the current session of the legislature. As reported last week, US DHHS Secretary Azar recently discussed his agency's efforts to address prescription drug pricing with an audience of physicians at the AMA's National Advocacy Conference. This article describes some of the current Administration's efforts in this regard. The MMA, the Maine Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Maine Chapter of the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the Maine Chapter of the American College of Physicians are working with the Maine Coalition Against Gun Violence and other stakeholders on state legislation to address the threat of gun violence to the public health. The Maine Department of Health and Human Services says it plans to ask the federal government for a Section 1115 waiver to allow the State to seek new ways to deliver and pay for health care services. The purpose of the waiver will be to give Maine more flexibility in spending Medicaid (MaineCare) dollars to address the opioid situation. Read More
