Governor Ends 24-month Prior Authorization Requirement for MAT
On March 14, 2019, Governor Janet Mills signed a Supplemental
Budget for Maine’s fiscal year ending June 30, 2019. Included in this
budget was the removal of the 24-month Prior Authorization (PA) requirement for
members receiving Methadone or Suboxone treatment.
Effective immediately, providers do not
need to submit PA requests for services provided on or after March
14, 2019. To ensure successful claims processing, providers will still need to
submit PA requests to the Department for services performed prior to
March 14, 2019, if the member has already exhausted their 104-unit
lifetime benefit.
The Department of Health and Human Services is initiating an
emergency rulemaking to remove the existing 24-month PA requirement from the MaineCare
Benefits Manual.
