Maine Legislature Will Discuss Health Care Reform Later this Year
The Health Coverage, Insurance & Financial Services (HCIFS) Committee has carried over four bills to its Second Regular Session beginning in January 2020 and will meet several times during the Fall to discuss health care reform issues. For several weeks, the MMA has had a very brief (2 questions) survey in the field seeking physicians' opinions on the topic of health care reform. We want your opinion, so if you have not yet had a chance to complete the survey, you'll find a link in this article.
Congratulations to Christine Hein, M.D., Cameron Trubey, M.D., and Charles Pattavina, M.D. for completing the Sugarloaf Marathon, and to Ganesha Santhyadka, M.D. for finishing the Sugarloaf 15K. Dr. Hein was, in fact, the second woman to cross the finish line.
A gathering organized by the Bangor Area Recovery Network last Thursday recognized those lost to drug overdose, but it focused on hopes for recovery from substance use disorder. It began with an informational session that included instruction in overdose recognition and the use of naloxone.
Pediatrician Dr. Carolyn Stwertka, and other physicians and hospital personnel at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital, have scheduled an informational forum on immunizations and a free vaccine clinic for Tuesday, May 21, at 5:30 p.m.

Richard Leon, U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Columbia, has ordered up to three days of hearings next month on the proposed merger between CVS Health Corp and Aetna.
The American Medical Association announced last week that it has hired Aletha Maybank, M.D., M.P.H., as its first ever chief health equity officer. Dr. Maybank was formerly deputy commissioner and founding director of the Center for Heath Equity, part of the New York City Public Health Department.
Lyme disease remains the most common tickborne disease in Maine. Providers reported over 1,400 cases in 2018 (preliminary data as of 3/25/19). While ticks can be active at any temperature above freezing, they are most active in warmer months. May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month in Maine, and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) is asking health care providers to help stress the importance of tick education.
MMA Legislative Call Tuesday, May 21st
The Maine Legislature is in full swing, with over 1760 bills printed. As we approach statutory adjournment date (June 19th), public hearings and work sessions are beginning to tail off while voting on bills increases. There's still work to do on the MMA Legislative Calls. The next call will be Tuesday, May 21st, at 8 p.m.
