Women Officers Highlight 2019 AMA Annual Meeting

The 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association is underway at the Hyatt Regency in Chicago.  The meeting opened on Saturday, June 8th and will conclude on Wednesday, June 12th.  You can follow the proceedings of the AMA House of Delegates and the educational sessions on the AMA web site here

Maine representatives at the meeting include AMA and MMA Past President Robert McAfee, M.D.; Delegates Richard Evans, M.D. and Maroulla Gleaton, M.D. (both MMA Past Presidents); Alternate Delegate Charles Pattavina, M.D. (also MMA Immediate Past President); and medical students Rushi Shah (UNECOM) and Sophia Kamilah Salas (Tufts - Maine Track).  MMA Interim CEO Andrew MacLean also has accompanied the Maine delegation.

This year is the 100th anniversary of the first woman member of the AMA and it is noteworthy that on Tuesday, June 11th when Patrice Harris, M.D. is inaugurated as the next President of the organization, the three top officer positions all will be occupied by women.  Barbara McAneny, M.D. will become the Immediate Past President and Susan Bailey, M.D. will become the President-Elect.  Dr. Harris will be the first African-American woman to serve as AMA President.
