Maine Medical Association Names Andrew B. MacLean Chief Executive Officer
During its board meeting on July 10, 2019, the MMA Board of Directors announced its selection of Andrew B. MacLean, J.D. of Augusta to be the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the state’s largest physician professional organization. Mr. MacLean succeeds Gordon H. Smith, Esq. who became Governor Mills’ Director of Opioid Response in February 2019.
Governor Janet Mills called for an opioid summit conference at the Augusta Civic Center, and over 1,150 people attended...a fact that underscores the concern that Mainers from a variety of backgrounds feel over an epidemic that has been killing hundreds of people around the state in recent years.
Attorney General Aaron Frey reported this week that drug overdose deaths in Maine declined by 14% in the first quarter of 2019 after a 15% decrease in 2018. Unfortunately, the news is not all good, as cocaine-involved deaths increased.
