MMA's 166th Annual Session Features Keynote Address by Governor Mills Joined by Key Health Officials

Last week the AMA Advocacy Resource Center held its annual State Advocacy Roundtable, an opportunity for representatives of various state medical societies and national specialty societies to discuss issues of significant and even critical importance to physicians around the country. MMA General Counsel Peter Michaud was a presenter at the session.
This year marks the 10th annual MMA Silent Auction, held during the MMA Annual Session, which takes place the weekend of September 6-8. All proceeds from the auction directly benefit the Maine Medical Education Trust which provides scholarships to Maine students pursuing a degree in medicine.
Those of us who live in the state know that summer arrives in a flash and is fleeting, at best. The MMA staff know that if you don't grab the few minutes of good weather while you can, you will soon be dressing for autumn. Click through to see what we've been up to!

The Maine CDC is investigating a few cases of chicken pox among recently arrived asylum seekers currently being housed at the Portland Expo.
Change in Referral Policy to the Public Health Nursing Program
Maine CDC’s Public Health Nursing Program (“PHN”) values its important partnership with Maine’s Birthing Hospitals. Together, we work to ensure the health and safety of mothers and their babies. Previous Department directives for referrals to PHN indicated that PHN served only families who were MaineCare-insured or uninsured with “indicated health concerns.” Starting today and moving forward, all prenatal and postpartum women and all newborns and infants up to 12 months of age may be referred to PHN for appropriate services and supports, regardless of insurance status.
Nominations are due by Wednesday, August 7 for the 2019 Mary Cushman, MD Award for Exceptional Humanitarian Service as a Medical Volunteer.
The AMA will continue to seek improvements in the surprise billing legislation during the August recess and when the House returns in September. The MMA will coordinate efforts with the AMA. The 128th Maine Legislature enacted "surprise billing" legislation several years ago, P.L. 2017, Chapter 218.
The Maine Independent Clinical Information Service (MICIS) is offering 1-hour individual Academic Detailing sessions on two topics: Treating Complex Patients with Chronic Pain who Are Prescribed Opioids and Overview of Office-Based Buprenorphine Prescribing. www.micismaine.org
