MMA's 166th Annual Session in Bar Harbor September 6-8
The Maine Medical Association will hold its 166th Annual Session in Bar Harbor on September 6-8, 2019. This year's session marks significant changes in MMA staff leadership and presentations from a number of health leaders in Maine government.
The AMA continues to seek improvements in the surprise billing legislation during the August recess and when the House returns in September. The MMA is coordinating efforts with the AMA. The 128th Maine Legislature enacted "surprise billing" legislation several years ago, P.L. 2017, Chapter 218.
The Medicare Program's CY 2020 Revisions to Payment Policies under the
Physician Fee Schedule and Other Changes to Part B Payment Policies,
Medicare Shared Savings Program Requirements, etc., will be published in the federal register on August 14th. The comment period will end September 27th.
A recent study suggests potential cardiovascular risk reduction associated with continuing statin therapy after the age of 75 years in persons already taking these drugs for primary prevention. However, due to the observational nature of this study, residual confounding cannot be excluded. Future studies, including interventional randomized studies, are needed to confirm these findings and support updating and clarification of guidelines on the use of statins for primary prevention in the elderly.

This year marks the 10th annual MMA Silent Auction, held during the MMA Annual Session, which takes place the weekend of September 6-8. All proceeds from the auction directly benefit the Maine Medical Education Trust which provides scholarships to Maine students pursuing a degree in medicine.
