Physician Voting More Important Than Ever

A recent statnews.com article began with the following, “Physicians do many things well. One thing they aren’t good at is showing up to vote. That bad habit starts early, and we believe it can — and must — be changed.”

It turns out that US physicians are rather complacent with respect to voting-- 41% chance of voting according to a study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, which is even worse than the average American voter's 50% chance of voting. This low physician turnout undercuts our ability to encourage voting among our health colleagues, trainees, and patients, despite being otherwise well-positioned to do so.

Given how public policy determines health in so many ways, and how many patients are marginalized, some physician-leaders and others formed the non-partisan group VoteHealth 2020. Therefore, the MMA joins votehealth2020.com and colleagues nationwide in encouraging all healthcare professionals to find ways to get their patients, their peers, and their peoples (e.g. communities and health systems) engaged in safely voting.

Of course, given the challenges of COVID-19 and in-person gatherings, creating a safe voting plan is a must. VoteHealth2020 helps with safe voting in the following ways:

1)    Provide materials for healthcare workers to engage patients in clinical spaces- these include placing QR codes on lanyards, flyers, and stickers that patients may then use to directly access voter registration tools.

2)    Provides materials for healthcare workers to engage their larger health systems or communities to vote- these include email signatures, sponsored webinars, and other local events we at VoteHealth can co-host.

Email info@votehealth2020.com to get involved or reach out to MMA Director of Communications and Government Affairs, Dan Morin at dmorin@mainemed.com or call/text at (207) 838-8613 for more information and to learn about Maine candidates for Congress and your respective Maine State Senate and Maine State House races.

The VoteHealth 2020 (www.votehealth2020.com) website also offers you the chance to confirm your existing voter registration, register to vote, and/or request an absentee ballot.
