Congratulations 2021 UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine & Maine Track Program Graduates

2021 TUSM, MMC, Maine Track graduate, Asha Mohamud, M.D.

The MMA wants to congratulate the recently graduated 2021 University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) and the 2021 graduates of the Tufts University School of Medicine and Maine Medical Center Maine Track program.

On behalf of the Maine Medical Association Board of Directors, physician members and staff of the Maine Medical Association, we want to extend a sincere congratulations to graduates from both programs and best of luck to each of you, including Class of 2021 UNECOM graduates, and Maine Medical Association Board of Director members, Jennifer Marsidi and Taylor Ouellette.

Maine Track program President, Spencer Scott spoke of the “privilege my identity gives me,” before giving way to the chosen speaker for the class, Asha Mohamud. Dr. Mohamud spoke on how she thought of herself as an atypical Maine Tracker and did not feel she belonged. Classmates, medical teams and patients often asked her where she was from. When she would answer, Lewiston, she stated she would be met with the dreaded, “Where are you from, from question,” despite the fact she attended elementary school in Lewiston and went on to graduate from Bates College. She is as she stated, “As Maine as it gets.” She then went on to describe how her story was not only one “of a kid that was never supposed to become a physician” but one of triumph and an underdog. She is now the only the second Somali woman physician in the history of Maine.

UNECOM Class of 2021 President, Megan Jastrembski aptly stated during the virtual ceremony, “We have some scars, but we have also gained so much. A sense of resilience. Unshakeable bonds…and a sense of purpose and perspective that will traject our careers towards becoming outstanding physicians in the service of our patients.” Dr. Jastrembski also recognized the influence of former classmate, Deane Kenny Stryker, a first year UNECOM student who was tragically killed in 2018. She mentioned Deane as, “someone who made our class so complete and who helped shape the bond we now enjoy. Deane’s memory is a light that should inspire us to be better people and better physicians.”

Both events were live streamed for family, friends, and the public who were unable to attend the virtual ceremony.
