Michael Delorge, University of Maine
Members of the Maine Medical Association,
My name is Michael, and for the past three months, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work as an intern at the Maine Medical Association. After being paired with the MMA through the Daniel Hanley undergraduate internship program, I was elated to join this cohort of Mainers who strive to make our state a healthier place to live each and every day.
In my time this summer as a Policy Intern, I worked under the direction of Dan Morin on the Communications and Government Affairs team. Working in a hybrid format, from both my home in Saco and at the MMA headquarters in Manchester, I had the opportunity to engage with members from all corners of the state in many different capacities.
The MMA was my first ever opportunity to work in government affairs and my first formal internship thus far in college. For the past three months, I have worked to engage MMA members like yourselves and help MMA staff prepare for the upcoming midterm election and legislative session. I’m grateful for each and every one of those conversations. Through work in external communications and research on Maine’s political campaigns and legislation, I leave this experience with a better understanding of my state, its healthcare landscape, and the people who make it tick.
I’ll bring this knowledge back with me to the University of Maine this fall where I’ll be continuing my studies in biology and political science, and onward into a career in public health policy. I’ll miss the constant opportunity for practical learning that this internship has afforded me.
While I might be leaving, Maine Medical Association employees and members like yourselves are just getting started. Legislative agendas will be finalized and advocacy will go on. Physicians will continue to care for patients as we continue to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic and the MMA will continue to support them along the way.
Thank you all for allowing me to share this opportunity with you.
