The award was presented to Dr. Barkin by Dr. Dylan McKenney who is the current President of MAPP.  In his comments, Dr. McKenney remarked, “For many years, Dr. Barkin has worked with state agencies, independent contractors and industry stake holders to negotiate policies that govern some of the fundamental aspects of our practice and provide sustainable benefit to our most vulnerable patient populations.”   “He has served more years as president of Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians than anyone else in the organizations history and has been a driving force for many years, contributing to the vibrant and dynamic life of our district branch.”

Dr. Barkin is a Yale trained, Board Certified general and geriatric psychiatrist with specific expertise in neuropsychiatry and psychopharmacology, specializing in mood and anxiety disorders. Dr. Barkin serves as Associate Medical Director of Change Healthcare, which is a large Healthcare IT (information technology) as well as Medical Director of Cornerstone Behavioral Health. He practices both forensic and clinical psychiatry in Portland, Maine and has extensive expertise in health care policy analysis which he frequently presents and lectures about nationally. His practice includes consultation to various businesses as well as government affairs including multi-stakeholder efforts in the health care. Dr. Barkin is immediate past-President and current Treasurer of the Maine Association of Psychiatric Physicians, on the board of the Maine Medical Association, President of Tri-County Mental Health Services, and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

The award is named after Dr. Ulrich B. Jacobsohn who was a well-respected individual and physician who had a long and distinguished career in psychiatry, over 50 years. He also served as President of the Maine Medical Association.
