It’s no surprise that the low voting rates are common, especially during this time of political vitriol and when too many people follow the siren call of the angriest voices. Historically, the voting rates of physicians in the United States have shown that physicians vote less often than the general population. However, you have a unique and specialized perspective in one of the most important professions nationwide, especially now. The need to express that perspective should take place where it matters most: the ballot box. Nearly every decision you and your colleagues make on a daily basis is governed by a law or regulation developed and implemented by elected officials. Many of whom have no, or limited knowledge of medicine.
If you have not yet registered to vote, or moved to another town you can find a fillable PDF voter registration form here and instructions here. A guide to absentee voting is available as well as an online absentee voting request application. Mainers who are registered to vote may use this free service to request an absentee ballot for the July 14, 2020 State Primary Election. Ballots must be received no later than 8:00 pm on Election Day.
There are also only 132 days until the 2020 General Election, including for President of the United States. There are 6 active or retired physicians either running for reelection, or election to the Maine Legislature.
More information on each of your colleagues running for office can be found here. Maine Secretary of State, Matthew Dunlap produced an informational video on the new election date and COVID-19 safety measures on voting procedures.
