Maine Secretary of State Seeking Physician Volunteers

Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows is asking the Maine Medical Association to provide recommendations to fill vacancies on the Medical Advisory Board for licensing drivers in the State of Maine.

Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows is asking the Maine Medical Association to provide recommendations to fill vacancies on the Medical Advisory Board for licensing drivers in the State of Maine.

The Medical Advisory Board is comprised of physicians and motor vehicle staff and consists of 8-10 physicians from various specialties. State law requires the board include the specialties of cardiology, gerontology, internal medicine, neurology or neurosurgery, ophthalmology. Psychiatry, family medicine, and rehabilitative medicine.

The board advises the Secretary of State on matters relating to medical conditions, vision standards, and driving. The board, or individuals may also be asked to evaluate reports submitted by clinicians on whether a person is medically competent to operate a motor vehicle on public roads.

By law, the board must meet at least every 2 years, but traditionally has met twice a year, usually on the first Friday of April and November from noon to 3:00 p.m. Expense reimbursement is provided.

Please reach out directly to MMA Director of Communications and Government Affairs, Dan Morin at dmorin@mainemed.com or by phone at (207) 480-4199 if you, or a colleague may be interested.
