Extreme Heat effecting patients and politics

We are facing extreme temperatures that are exacerbated by nearly a half a million people facing no power as a result of last Friday’s storm.  According to the most recent DHMH Weekly Heat-related Illness Surveillance Report, covering June 19 through 25, there have been no heat related deaths thus far in 2012.  In 2011, there were 34 confirmed heat related deaths between the months of May and August. In 2010, a total of 32 deaths; in 2009, six heat related deaths; in 2008, 17; and, in 2007, 21 deaths were confirmed as heat related.  The Department of Health has a helpful tool for heat related issues; the Extreme Heat web site offers the State Heat Plan, Heat Reports, FAQs, heat preparedness tips, updated contact information and more.  The DHMH Extreme Heat web site is available at: http://dhmh.maryland.gov/extremeheat/SitePages/Home.aspx.

The heat outside is temperate compared to the temperature in Washington.  As tempers continue to flare with last week’s Supreme Court ruling, the American Association of Medical Society Executives has posted the responses of medical associations to the ruling ---  the variation in response is interesting.  The physician community has been divided on this issue.  The American Medical Association supported the ACA, while the largest medical society in Maryland, MedChi, did not support the measure.  MedChi expressed concern that the ACA did not fix the Medicare shortfall and failed to address the issue of defensive medicine.  If you missed the MedChi response to the ruling it is available here

With all that occurred last week you might have missed the fact Governor O’Malley announced the appointment of Andrea Mathias, MD, MPH, a prominent MedChi member, as the new Chair of the Board of Physicians. MedChi is very pleased and excited about the announcement.  Dr. Mathias is a native of Worcester County and received her MD and MPH from Johns Hopkins University.  Dr. Mathias explained “I believe in the value of collaboration with our professional organizations in Maryland and I have enjoyed opportunities to work with the Maryland Academy of Family Physicians, MedChi, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to facilitate communication and common ground on important issues.  Organizational relationships will be an asset in support of the Board of Physicians.”

Dr. Mathias will replace longtime MedChi member Paul Elder, MD.  Dr. Elder was not eligible for reappointment to the Board due to term limits.  The Board of Physicians sunset and re-codification will be a major contested issue over the next year.  MedChi looks forward to working with Dr. Mathias to reform the Board of Physicians and improve the process for Maryland patients and physicians.Read more
