Honda Passes Chrysler as Asia Brands Widen U.S. Share

Honda Motor Co. passed Chrysler LLC in August to grab fourth place in U.S. auto sales this year as cars won market share from trucks amid an industrywide slump. Asia-based brands, led by Nissan Motor Co.'s 14 percent gain, raised their share of August U.S. sales to 47.3 percent, beating General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler for a fourth month, research firm Autodata Corp. said yesterday. Tokyo-based Honda may keep the No. 4 spot as a sluggish economy and fuel prices crimp demand for the light trucks that make up more than half of Chrysler's volume. Honda's 2008 U.S. sales are up 1.7 percent, while Chrysler's are down 24 percent.

Electricity the Gas of Tomorrow's Cars, Ford Exec Says

VALKENBURG, Netherlands -- Electricity -- not hydrogen, gasoline or ethanol -- will fuel the cars of tomorrow, says Ford Motor Co.'s global product development chief, Derrick Kuzak. However, Ford's car czar said the automaker will continue to develop all of these alternatives. "The ultimate solution is the electrification of the vehicle," said Kuzak, who stressed he was speaking as an engineer and was not commenting specifically on Ford's future product plans. He said alternatives such as hydrogen fuel cells, in addition to facing several technological hurdles, will require the construction of an entirely new energy infrastructure -- something he does not think is likely or practical. In contrast, an electric car would be able to use the existing power grid.

GM Plans to Show Production Volt This Month

General Motors plans to show a production model of its Chevrolet Volt extended-range electric vehicle as part of the automaker’s upcoming 100-year anniversary celebration this month. The automaker, which formally celebrates the 100th anniversary Sept. 16, so far has shown only concept versions of the Volt. “The car will be a true representation of what the production version looks like and be somewhat different from the concept versions,” [a GM source told Automotive News Europe.] The car will be shown to employees and media at GM headquarters in Detroit.

Honda Bringing Back Insight Nameplate for Hybrid

TOKYO -- Honda is bringing back the defunct Insight nameplate for a hybrid-only vehicle planned for the Japanese, European and North American markets early next year, as the automaker strives to play catch-up with rival Toyota in hybrids. Honda's original Insight hybrid was introduced in 1999 but it was discontinued in 2006 after sluggish sales totaling a cumulative 17,000 worldwide. The reasons for the Insight's failure to catch on are unclear, but relatively high pricing, its unusual styling and other reasons may be to blame. Tokyo-based Honda, Japan's No. 2 automaker, will show a ''concept model'' of the Insight at the Paris Motor Show next month, Honda said in a statement Thursday. "The name Insight was chosen to denote Honda's 'insight' into a new era in which hybrid vehicles come within reach of most car buyers," the company said.

Ford Group's Aim: To Keep its Tech Edge

Unnamed unit seeks in-car advances
Ford Motor Co.'s newly created business unit to rapidly develop in-car technologies doesn't even have a name yet -- it's been using the working title "Connected Services" as other names are researched -- but there's been no lack of speed, or direction, on the new 40-person team. The group, a compilation of Ford's most talented leaders in engineering, marketing and the like, already has filed for more than a dozen patents, Doug VanDagens, director of the new group, told the Free Press in a recent interview. "They are just geeked," VanDagens said. "They are ready to go." The technology group's overriding purpose is to make sure Ford doesn't fall behind in the in-car computer revolution it helped launch in 2007 with Sync... The Microsoft technology, which has helped Ford win over younger consumers and get people to pay more for its cars and trucks, had been available in North America only on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles. [But] the Windows operating system for vehicles is now available for other automakers.

Chrysler to Cancel Nitro or Liberty by End of 2012

Chrysler LLC, the third-largest U.S. automaker, will eliminate either the Dodge Nitro or Jeep Liberty sport-utility vehicle by the end of 2012, according to a sales executive. "As we move toward 2012, we won't have this dual badging of products and duplicating products," [North American sales chief Steve] Landry told reporters on the call yesterday. Chrysler plans to have "one branded body" for the Nitro and Liberty after that, he said in response to a question.

NADA Update
NADA Convention: 'Full Speed Ahead' to New Orleans in January

New Orleans Hospitality Industry Coming Back Strong after Gustav
NEW ORLEANS – New Orleans city officials say that damage caused by Hurricane Gustav this week is "minor and easily repairable." A statement issued by the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) reported little to no disruption in meetings, conventions and special events scheduled over the next two weeks. The Convention Center, New Orleans Superdome and major hotels suffered only minor damage such as window breaks. There is no mid-range or long-term impact of any kind, the CVB reported.

The New Orleans Saints will open their National Football League season on Sunday as scheduled in the Superdome. The New Orleans International Airport is now operational and more routine airline traffic is expected to resume today. "We're pleased to hear that the city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas are making such progress,” says Steve Pitt, NADA vice president of conventions and expositions. "Residents and workers from across the region already have begun returning to their homes and businesses. And for us, it’s full speed ahead for the NADA convention’s return to New Orleans in January."

The NADA convention will return to New Orleans in about five months. The convention dates are Jan. 24-27. Registration is open. Several hotels already have sold out. Registration fees and hotel rates have remained unchanged, and discounted airfare is available. More than 700 exhibitors, 150 dealer workshops, a heavy-weight lineup of speakers and an additional half-day of workshops, including "Lifeline to Profit$" (offered both Friday and Tuesday) are scheduled. Since Katrina, more than $1 billion has been spent on hotel renovations and 913 restaurants are open.

Sign Up Today to Become a Green Checkup Dealer

NADA is urging its members to offer free Green Checkups at their dealerships during the month of September. The Green Checkup focuses on the things that have the greatest effect on fuel economy, such as oil and air filters, engine performance, tire pressure and emission controls. Participating dealers can refer to the Green Checkup Guidelines, which provide the estimated tech hours to perform a Green Checkup.

Already, dealers in 45 states have signed up to become Green Checkup Dealers. (Click here to sign up to become a Green Checkup Dealer.) Dealers may decide to provide the Green Checkup along with inspections of child passenger safety seats that are also offered at many dealerships in September. “While customers wait in line to have their child safety seats inspected, we will offer them the option of having the Green Checkup,” says Annette Sykora, NADA chairman.

Although NADA is promoting Green Checkup Month in September, the program is designed for dealers to offer checkups as part of their routine service year-round.

To help dealers raise public awareness of how the auto industry is increasing fuel economy through innovation and new technologies, NADA created the Toolkit “A New Car is a Green Car.” The toolkit is designed to highlight how easy it is to be green. It includes tips on hosting green driving events, participating in the Green Checkup program and case studies that offer “greenprints” for success.

Committed to Community: NADA Hole-in-One Insurance to Host Charity Golf Tournament in New Orleans

NADA's hole-in-one insurance program, ACECO, will host an inaugural “Dealers for Charity Golf Tournament” on Friday, Jan. 23, 2009 at TPC Louisiana, home of the PGA TOUR Zurich Classic of New Orleans. The dates of the NADA Convention & Exposition in New Orleans are Jan. 24-27. The 7,300-yard, par-72 Pete Dye-designed course is set among bayous and old-growth cypress trees. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Brees Dream Foundation, a charitable organization founded by New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and his wife Brittany.

"NADA's convention theme is 'Committed to Community,' so it's fitting that we're raising money for a New Orleans-based organization," says Lin Peacock, vice president of NADA Insurance. The National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation donated $400,000 in May to restore the athletic fields at Lusher Charter School, located in the heart of Uptown New Orleans.

If you're interested in a sponsorship, contact tournament director Alicia Rodriguez at (888) 828-8540 for details. The tournament is open to NADA members only. Fees for the 144-person tournament are $300 per person or $1,200 per foursome. To register online, visit www.ACECOinsurance.com.
