Cash for Clunkers program helps rev up auto sales, with overall index up 2.7%
NEW YORK -- Retail sales surged in August, with the Cash for Clunkers program giving auto sales an extra boost, the government reported [today]. The Commerce Department said total retail sales jumped 2.7% last month, compared with July's revised decline of 0.2%.

Obama to Talk With Autoworkers, AFL-CIO Members

Obama is scheduled to meet with workers at the General Motors Lordstown assembly plant near Youngstown, Ohio, where GM recently was able to start a second production line because of demand prompted by the federal Cash for Clunkers program. Later, the president addresses the AFL-CIO convention in Pittsburgh, where he will urge the nation's largest labor union to support his health care overhaul.

Ford Unveils U.S.-Bound Compact Minivan

Ford, GM, Chrysler find inspiration overseas for new U.S. cars
FRANKFURT — Ford Motor Co., unveiled a new compact minivan that will go on sale in the United States in 2011 at the auto show here [today] as it announced plans to build a family of ten different vehicles based on its 2011 Focus compact. The seven-passenger Grand C-Max minivan will be a key part of Ford’s growing compact family as it shifts its U.S. sales to include more high fuel-efficiency small cars.
