Financial Regulation: Main Street vs. the White House

The financial industry and its allies are enlisting small business in the fight against a proposed consumer protection agency
For a White House fighting the perception it has gone easy on big banks, winning Congress' approval for the Consumer Financial Protection Agency (CFPA) is a top priority. Yet the financial-services industry ... fears the agency would limit many lucrative products. So it has put killing the CFPA near the top of its to-do list.

Editor's Note: Dealers are urged to ask their Representatives and Senators to oppose the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency because it poses a direct threat to dealer-assisted financing. Congress needs to know that a new bureaucracy will be overly burdensome, decrease access to credit and ultimately increase the cost of credit for consumers. Members of the House and Senate can be reached through the Capitol switchboard at (202) 225-3121.

GM May Boost Output of New Models

General Motors Co. dealers are pushing the car maker to boost availability of some of its hottest-selling models, forcing the company to reconsider production plans for 2009. "We are selling every Cadillac SRX, every Equinox, every Buick LaCrosse and every Camaro within 48 hours of being delivered to us," said John Bergstrom, owner of several Wisconsin GM dealerships. In trying to replenish the pipeline, GM executives say they will have to balance the outcry for more cars from dealers with the need to control supply so that it doesn't flood the market.

Dealers Indicate Penske Close to Buying Saturn

Saturn dealers nationwide have received new sales and service agreements from Roger Penske, a sign the auto icon is close to finalizing a deal for the castoff General Motors Co. brand. The two-year agreements, which are subject to completion of a deal for Saturn, were sent to about 340 U.S. dealers, who had until Sept. 11 to sign and return them. "We can't wait for this thing to get done," said Stuart Lasser, who owns three Saturn outlets in New Jersey. "We have to get on with our lives, we have to move on; the franchise has to move on."

Toyota Plans Marketing Blitz to Reverse U.S. Slide

DETROIT - Toyota Motor Corp is preparing a $1 billion marketing campaign to boost flagging U.S. sales, expanding hybrid models under the Prius name and allowing its dealers more room to keep pricing competitive. Toyota dealers at a meeting with Toyota executives in Las Vegas this week were told that the automaker would adjust pricing on new Toyota models by widening dealer margins to give sales representatives more leeway to close deals with car shoppers.
